|Bernhard Kohl next CERA positive|
Austrian Bernhard Kohl of the Gerolsteiner team is the next
positive on CERA after the re-tests of the Tour samples. The winner of the Polka
dot jersey and the third of the overall ranking is the second one of Gerolsteiner
to be caught on CERA. The first one was Stefan Schumacher a week ago.
The French anti-doping agency AFLD had tested Kohl's blood samples. The B-sample
analysis (a lab in Switzerland) still has to come. If it confirms the result,
Kohl will face a two-year suspension and the possibility too loose all his results
in the Tour de France 2008.
Bernhard Kohl is the fourth rider to get caught on CERA. Stefan Schumacher,
Riccardo Ricco and Leonardo Piepoli are the others.
The 26-year-old Kohl turned pro in 2002 with the Austrian Team Elk Haus. He
rode for the Rabobank TT3 team for two years before joining T-Mobile in 2005.
In 2007 he transferred to Gerolsteiner. For 2009 he would join the Belgian Silence-Lotto
team as Gerolsteiner quits its sponsorship at the end of the season.
Silence-Lotto has already reacted to the news in a press release:
Around the clock of 19.00 hours, the press told us that Bernhard Kohl has been
controlled positively for the use of CERA.
"We have immediately checked this information with the Gerolsteiner's
manager, who has confirmed it.
If this information is confirmed by the official authorities, the team management
will start the legal steps in view of breaking immediately our future collaboration
Today Team Gerolsteiner also announced that they won't ride the last race of
the season, the Giro di Lombardia. With Paris-Tours as final race Team Gerolsteiner
came to an end after a sponsorship of eleven years. Team manager Hans-Michael
Holczer also announced to leave the sport entirely.
