74th Giro del Lazio (1.HC)

The 74th Giro del Lazio (October 5) is won by Francesco Masciarelli (Acqua & Sapone). The son of team manager Palmiro attacked in the final and had a three seconds lead at the finish on a first chasing group of thirteen. Filippo Pozzato (Liquigas) finished as second and Danilo Di Luca (LPR) finished for the second time this weekend as third. Yesterday he was already third in the Memorial Cimurri.

This race was also the first race of Alessandro Ballan after winning the World Championships in Varese a week ago. The 74th Giro del Lazio was animated by a break of two riders attacking after 17 km. The two Nazareno Rossi (Serramenti) and Roberto Ferrari (LPR) worked well together and got a maximum gap of eight minutes before the CSF Group - Navigare team started the chase. They were later joined by Lampre and Milram. On the long Tuscolo climb both Rossi and Ferrari were caught.

On the second climb Francesco Masciarelli (Acqua & Sapone) attacked together with CSF rider Domenico Pozzovivo and Valerio Agnoli (Liquigas) but in the descent the trio was caught by a large chasing group led by Alessando Ballan (Lampre). With 18 km to go a part of the bunch came back as well.

In the final six kilometers it was Michele Scarponi (Serramenti) who attacked but three kilometers later he was caught. Immediately we got a new attack from Francesco Masciarelli (Acqua & Sapone). The 22 year old from Pescara went strong and was able to hold off the chasing group led home by Pozzato (Liquigas).
