Profile Ladies Tour - Stage 6

The final stage (September 7) from Valkenburg to Berg & Terblijt over 116,7 km is won by German star Ina Teutenberg (Team Columbia). On top of the Geulhemmerberg Teutenberg was 12 seconds faster than Marianne Vos and 22 seconds than Judith Arndt. Charlotte Becker (Equipe Nürnberger) finished as fifth which was enough to secure the overall win in the 2008 Profile Holland Ladies Tour. Ina Teutenberg and Irene van den Broek completed the podium.

During this stage the riders had to do six laps within each lap three main climbs namely the Bemelerberg (6x), Cauberg (6x) and Geulhemmerberg (7x). The finish of the race is as we mentioned on top of the Geulhemmerberg.

The first real break came from the leader in the mountains ranking Angela Hennig (Team DSB Bank). About four riders were able to bridge across but on the second time the Cauberg only three women were left in front namely Angela Hennig (DSB Bank), Carla Ryan (Cervelo-Lifeforce) and Loes Gunnewijk (Team Flexpoint).

The three worked well together but one lap later they got company of stage winner Anke Wichmann (Team Columbia). About half way the race Marianne Vos (DSB Bank) launched an attack on the Cauberg and was followed by amongst others Ina Teutenberg, Irene van den Broek, Trixi Worrack and Regina Bruins.

In the penultimate lap the break was all caught and Ina Teutenberg (Columbia) decided to launch another attack. Marianne Vos tried to bridge across but wasn't able to close the gap.

Going into the final lap Teutenberg had a lead of 40-45 seconds on the chasing group with Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nürnberger), Regina Bruins (Van Bemmelen), Irene van den Broek (AA Drink), Sarah Düster (Cervelo-Lifeforce), Loes Gunnewijk (Team Flexpoint), Marianne Vos (DSB Bank), Judith Arndt (Team Columbia), Tina Liebig (DSB Bank) and race leader Charlotte Becker (Equipe Nürnberger).

Despite the nine chasers were working well together they didn't get much closer to Teutenberg. On the Cauberg Marianne Vos went in the counter attack she came to about 10 seconds but couldn't close the gap. Teutenberg took her third stage win this week with a 12 seconds lead on Vos and a 22 seconds lead on Arndt. Race leader Charlotte Becker finished as fifth 32 seconds down on her compatriot.

Team reports
Columbia: Teutenberg takes third stage win and second overall in Holland
San Luis Obispo, CA, 8 September, 2008 - Columbia's Ina-Yoko Teutenberg took a strong solo win in the last stage of the Holland Ladies Tour - a victory which secured her second place overall and first place in the points competition.

On a tough, hilly stage in south Holland, aggressive team-work by Columbia culminated when Teutenberg moved clear of the field.

"It was a very tense day of racing." Teutenberg commented. "The last part of the stage consisted of six laps on the hills around Valkenberg, and things started hotting up on the fourth when
[Dutchwoman] Marianne Vos made a big attack."

"Four riders went away, then I got across, but on the fifth lap it all started to come back together. Then [Columbia team-mate] Judith Arndt counter-attacked, finally got caught, and I went away alone immediately afterwards. I got a maximum of 57 seconds advantage, which was great, but they started to reel me in."

"I think Vos must have been 10 seconds behind me at most at the summit of the final climb and the finish. It was really very close. The last 500 metres were very hard, and it was only in the last 50 metres that I realised that I could win and that Vos wasn't going to catch me. Being able to fend off such a talented climber is a good feeling!"

Teutenberg admitted that Columbia were going all out for the overall win, but that she could not be unhappy with the team's performance in the six-day stage race.

"We got second overall, four stages wins, and the points jersey. I can be really satisfied even if we were riding today to see if we could take the race outright. That didn't happen, but we did everything we could."
As for the upcoming World Championships, Teutenberg is cautious, saying "I'm feeling in good shape for the World Championships and the terrain is similar to today's stage, but it's a very different race with a very tough field."

"Next stop for me is the last round of the World Cup." - the GP Rund um Die Nürnberger in Germany on September 14th.
