Profile Ladies Tour - Stage 1

From September 2 to September 7 the women's peloton gathers together in The Netherlands for the Holland Ladies Tour. Since this year the Tour is named the Profile Ladies Tour. The Tour contains six stages and has start with a 109,5 km stage in and around Hellendoorn. The race will end on Sunday with the queens stage from Valkenburg to Berg en Terblijt with finish on top of the Geulhemmerberg.

The race has a strong participation field with Olympic Champion in the points race Marianne Vos, the winner of the Thüringen Rundfahrt Judith Arndt, Dutch Time Trial Champion Mirjam Melchers-van Poppel, top sprinters Ina Teutenberg and Regina Schleicher and Dutch top riders as Kirsten Wild and Suzanne de Goede. The big absentee is defending champion Kristin Armstrong despite she was announced to start for the Cervelo Lifeforce team.

Today's first stage over 109,5 km in and around Hellendoorn ended up in a sprint won by Columbia's fast woman Ina Teutenberg. Kirsten Wild finished as second and Marianne Vos as third. In the tough final Vos and Wild attacked and got a slight gap on the bunch. Equipe Nürnberger, for team leader Suzanne de Goede, brought both Dutch riders back with less than 200 meters to go and Teutenberg was the only one able to pass them.

Tomorrows second stage is a 20,5 km individual time trial in Hellendoorn. Teutenberg will start the stage as race leader and has to defend a four seconds gap on her closest competitors.

Team Columbia Report: Teutenberg takes Holland Ladies Tour opener

In Hellendoorn, Ina-Yoko Teutenberg has scorched to a classy sprint victory in the opening stage of the Holland Ladies Tour.

"She won it comfortably, by a good three bikes lengths. It was very impressive." Sports director Ronny Lauke said afterwards.

"It was a fairly tough finish, too, a little bit uphill in the last kilometer, a few concerns and with some covvled sections on the run-in."

"But Ina got into the right postition with 800 meters to go, and then just went for it."

"But we controlled the race during the whole stage - which was through typical Dutch terrain, just a few small hills with a couple of loops of one large circuit then a couple more of a smaller one before the finsih."

"They weren't any serious breakaways, so we kept things together for Ina for the sprint, dropped her in the last kilometre, and she did exactly what was expected of her.”

“She didn’t even have a lead-out, but once she was in the right position for the sprint, really it wasn’t going to be possible to stop her.” Lauke is optimistic that Teutenberg will do her utmost to defend her overall lead in the flat 20.5 kilometre time trial on Wednesday.

“Ina’s not a specialist, but she definitely knows how to turn in a solid ride in a time trial.”

“With any luck, she could hold onto the lead - or one of her team-mates might take over, who knows?”

“Whatever happens, Ina’s not going to throw away this lead lightly. I know that for sure.”

The Ladies Tour of Holland finishes on Sunday in Valkenberg.
