11th Deutschland Tour - Stage 3
The third stage from Herrieden to Wiesloch over 214,9 km is won by Liquigas
Italian Leonardo Bertagnolli. He escaped in the final together with Daniel Navarro
and was able to win the stage with a slight advantage on the bunch. Navarro
was chased down by the bunch and finished as sixth. Rigoberto Uran won the peloton
sprint for second. Thomas Lövkvist finished as third with Capecchi and
Visconti in fourth and fifth place. Linus Gerdemann remains in the overall lead.
The race was animated by a break of Johannes Fröhlinger (Gerolsteiner)
and Christian Knees (Milram). The duo attacked after 10 km and got a maximum
gap of 7.40.
On the Königstuhl with about 25 km to go in the stage the duo was caught.
Columbia and Rujano were forcing the pace and a group of eight riders went over
the top of the climb with Rujano, Lövkvist, Gerdemann, Brajkovic, Mollema,
Navarro, Capecchi and Bertagnolli.
In the descent lots of riders came back and among them also Jussi Veikkanen
who immediately attacked together with Daniel Navarro and Leonardo Bertagnolli.
With about 9 km to go a group of about 15 riders caught the Gerdemann group
at the same moment Veikkanen got a mechanical in front.
Navarro and Bertagnolli worked well together and had a maximum gap of around
30-40 seconds. In the final kilometer the gap was still 10 seconds. Bertagnolli
started the sprint, Navarro wasn't able to follow, and won the stage. The bunch
ended in the same time as Bertganolli with Uran in second and Lövkvist
in third.
Bertagnolli commented after the finish, "This victory is a great joy,
and is a good redemption after the Saturday's stage in which I accumulated too
much delay. I've given up the dreams for the final ranking, I could only think
to the journey's successes."
The rider imposed himself in a difficult sprint on the finish line of the stage
Herrieden-Wiesloch, after an escape with the Spanish Navarro in the final kilometres.
"He collaborated only a little and I was really afraid that in the last
metres he could pass me. In addition, the group was arriving; I risked everything
and I was rewarded" Bertagnolli added his hopes before the arrival in Bremen.
"One goal was hit," concluded Bertagnolli, "now I will try to
exploit all the opportunities to bring my total victories to four this season.
The fourth stage will take the riders from Wiesloch to Mainz over 174 km. This
will be the first real stage for the sprinters before heading to the mountains
again with the stage to Winterberg.
