Italy's Gian Paolo Cheula is the surprise winner of the 2008 edition of the Gran Premio Nobili Rubinetterie one-day race, held Saturday at Arona (a town on the Lago Maggiore western shore in the north-west of Italy) over a route of 180.3 kilometres. The Barloworld rider, back to the top of a race podium after two years, won the three-man battle for line honours ahead of fellow escapees Gabriele Bosisio (Team LPR Brakes-Ballan) and Bruno Rizzi (NGC Medical-OTC).

The race was featured by plenty of earlier moves, all of which got nullified, before the all-Italian trio of podium finishers made the right one about 44 km from the line; they held on to a decent lead over the 23-strong chasing peloton - eventually led home by Danilo Di Luca and containing also Filippo Simeoni and Gilberto Simoni - after their advantage grew to over the minute. Jurgen Van Goolen of Belgium took fourth place as he almost caught the escapees and eventually crossed the line in between the lead trio and the chase group.

Press Release from Team Barloworld: Italian Giampaolo Cheula took a very craved victory for his Team Barloworld in today's 12th G.P. Nobili Rubinetterie, in Arona (Novara). 29-year-old rider managed to join the right escape started at about 40 km to go together with Bosisio (Lpr Ballan) and Rizzi (NGC-OTC). The three cyclists were able to reach the finish line with a securing lead over the peloton, and Barloworld's Gianpaolo Cheula, with an impressive action, achieved a clear victory starting his sprint with 300 mt to go. Bosisio placed second, whilst Rizzi settled for the third place of the podium. The route provided 10 laps of a 16.5 km circuit, with a further last lap of 15 km, for a demanding and hilly race over 180 km.

"He came out of the Tour de France with a very good shape - stated with satisfaction DS Alberto Volpi - and today he showed it to everyone. The whole team Barloworld was perfect, as it was yesterday, but Cheula today looked unbeatable! I'm so happy with him because he is such a nice guy: he is a hard-working guy and an extraordinary team-mate. He's always helpful and reliable from January to October. He really deserved this victory". And Giampaolo Cheula also received compliments from his team manager Claudio Corti, who has a strong consideration of Cheula both as a rider and a man.

Tomorrow at the Giro dell'Appennino, Team Barloworld will lineup the strong duo Pfannberger-Cheula, both in line to confirm the brilliant results they achieved over the last few days. Cheula of course will be very motivated with today's victory in his mind, and will never lack the support of the whole Team Barloworld in his intent.

Ahh victory and the kisses from the misses, what could make a finer day?
