Thüringen Rundfahrt - Women: Stage 4

Grete Treier (Gauss RDZ) has won the fourth stage in the Thüringen Rundfahrt. Treier was the fastest ahead of Arndt and Worrack. Treier is also the new leader with a slight gap on her two german break companions with the ITT of tomorrow to come…

Stage 4: Rund um Schleiz 125.2 km
The fourth stage also called Rund um Schleiz is about 125 km long in distance. Marianne Vos (Team DSB Bank) and Carmen McNellis were two non starters this afternoon.

In the beginning of the race we had no serious attacks. Angela Hennig won the first KOM sprint ahead of Felicia Gomez and Noemi Cantele. A few kilometers later Dutch Suzanne de Goede took the first sprint ahead of Ziliute and Kupfernagel.

After 25 km of racing the pack was still together with two more climbs to come. Angela Hennig took also the points on the second KOM while Canadian Felicia Gomez won the third KOM sprint. On the third climb we also saw an attack of Saskia Elemans (Team Flexpoint) but she wasn't allowed to go.

Over the top of the climb Alison Powers (USA) and Loes Gunnewijk (Team Flexpoint) attacked. The bunch didn't react and the gap went quickly up to about 2.00. Monica Holler, Andrea Thürig and Diane Ziliute went in the counter attack but the Bigla team of Noemi Cantele chased them down immediately.

The second sprint was won by Gunnewijk ahead of Powers and De Goede. At this sprint the gap of the two leaders was 2.44 and Gunnewijk was the new virtual GC leader. At this point in the race, after the feed zone in which Katherine Carroll abandoned the race, the bunch started to chase.

The two leaders divided the prizes as Powers won the third sprint ahead of Gunnewijk and Johansson. In the meantime the gap was down to 1.40 as race leader Cantele went in the counter attack with Oxana Kozonchuk and Christiane Soeder. But these girls were not allowed to go either.

The leaders tried everything they could to stay in front but after 104 km of racing there break was over. Just before they were caught Gunnewijk won the fourth KOM sprint. Immediately we got a new attack with Judith Arndt, Grete Treier and Trixi Worrack. These three attacked on the fifth climb of the day.

The three worked well together and the gap went quickly up to 45 seconds. Arndt took the fifth KOM sprint but the gap was still growing. With less than 10 km to go the gap was actually around the 1.30. Karin Thürig and Emma Johansson went in the counter attack but came too late just as the bunch.

In the sprint for the stage win it was Grete Treier who took the win ahead of Judith Arndt and Trixi Worrack. Karin Thürig finished as fourth at 1.40 while Emma Johansson was fifth at 2.01. The bunch finished 2.14 down on the fabulous three. Grete Treier is also the new leader. She has to defend a three seconds lead on Arndt and a 16 seconds lead on Worrack in the individual time trial of tomorrow.
