Michael Ball Announces USA Cycling Trustee Bid
USA Cycling has begun its annual election for trustees; Michael Ball has announced his candidacy for the USPRO At-Large Trustee position. Candidate Statement

A strong advocate for ridersí rights, Michaelís goal - once elected is to demonstrate his commitment to the sport for the long term and continue to be a catalyst for change.

Candidate Statement

Never before has our sport been at such a crossroads and never before has there been such a need for new voices.

My name is Michael Ball and it is my honor and privilege to pursue a position that would afford me the opportunity to represent you, the athletes, at the sportís highest domestic level as a member of the USPRO Board of Trustees.

Like all of you, I raced my bike with the fervor to win. I still ride, but my enthusiasm has transitioned from that of competitor to passionate team owner. My teamís ďHere to StayĒ motto is more than just a catchy tagline on the back of a T-shirt. It truly states my commitment to the sport for the long term and my desire to be a catalyst for change.

And change is needed. Worldwide, cycling is losing sponsors, media attention has focused on scandal, public interest has waned, and your rights as professional athletes are far from protected in comparison to other mainstream sports.

For the past two seasons, I have been in a unique position as both a team owner and a team sponsor, allowing me the unequivocal freedom to speak out on key issues. Regardless of the issue, I fight for what I believe is right, not only for my own riders, but for the entire peloton, because I believe the future of our sport depends on it.

From ridersí rights to fair anti-doping practices, I have been an advocate for improving the conditions under which you compete. More importantly, I have taken the steps to create concrete initiatives, most recently in the establishment of the Professional Cyclistís Catastrophic Injury Fund, a program that will provide a financial safety net for all professional and elite riders in the event of a major injury.

As the At-Large Trustee for USPRO, I will continue my commitment to you and ensure your voice is heard. From periodic rider forums at major races to establishing a dedicated rider forum online, I will listen to your ideas, feedback and concerns. I will keep working toward changes that improve the quality of events and increase the positive exposure the sport needs to grow. I will also promote unified, cooperative action between teams, race organizers and USA Cycling membership.

We all want more for this sport than just survival. We want a viable, profitable entity that will attract new sponsors, generate new dollars and bring new fans to the sport we love. Letís do it right. Letís do it together. Letís fight the good fight.
