32nd Route du Sud - Stage 3
Przemyslaw Niemiec takes another classy win in the mountains of the Route du Sud, but just behind Daniel Martin is the one "beating the old French dudes"...

Polish climber Przemyslaw Niemiec (Miche-Silver Cross) has won the queen stage of the Route du Sud, covering 181 kilometres from Pierrefitte Nestalas to Superbagneres.

Over the climbs of the Tourmalet, Val Louron and Peyresourde, the peloton was blown to pieces, as a select group of favourites emerged behind a big breakaway. While Niemiec paced himself perfectly to catch and pass fellow fugitive Kevin de Weert (Cofidis) for the win, Slipstream climbing prodigy Daniel Martin attacked late to finish fourth, 47 seconds ahead of Luca Pierfelici (Acqua & Sapone) and 58 in front of Christophe Moreau (Agritubel), to take the race lead.

As for another "old French dude" (as Martin had referred to him yesterday), race leader Noan Lelarge, there was no joy. Under pressure and feeling the effects of yesterday's time-trial-winning effort, he wilted and abandoned the race.

The Route du Sud has proved a very happy hunting ground for talented climber Niemiec. In 2006, he won the Izaourt - Port de Bales mountain time-trial stage, on the road to fourth overall. The Pole, a member of Miche since 2004, also finished as runner-up the year before. As a result of this attritional stage, he also also moved into the top ten overall.
