Women's Emakumeen Bira - Stage 1
Marianne Vos let her legs do the talking in shattering the peloton with her attack on the final climb in stage 1 of the Spanish stage race.

The Emakumen Bira is a very tough stage race for women in Spain. Second in difficulty to perhaps, the Tour de L’Aude and the Thüringen Rundfahrt, one of the toughest races for women in the world.

Last year the race was won by Susanne Ljungskog. Ljungskog won ahead of Marianne Vos and Nicole Brändli. We will have another winner this year as Ljungskog will not participate in the race. Some of the big guns aren’t at the start as the Grande Boucle Feminin (the women's tour de France) will start next Monday (June 16) in Gent (Belgium). The Emakumen Bira will take from June 12 to June 15.

The first stage in the Emakumen Bira took the riders from Iurreta to Goiuria over 76,2 km. During the stage the women had two categorized climbs the 2nd category climb of Trabaku and the final climb up to the finish in Goiuria (Category 3).

With 15 km to go in the race Marianne Vos (Team DSB Bank) and German Champion Luise Keller (High Road) attacked out of a large group. The two worked well together but Vos got rid of her companion on the final climb. The Dutch rider won with a 19 seconds lead on Keller. 1.03 later Tatiana Guderzo  finished in third place taking the final podium step.World Champion Marta Bastianelli was the first of the other favorites arriving at 1.10 of Vos's pace for 4th. Fabiana Luperini, the winner of 2006, rounded off the top 5.

Marianne Vos is the first G.C. leader. With this win Vos responded with her legs after she was passed over for the time-trial slot at the Olympic Games in Beijing. The Dutch selector announced that Mirjam Melchers-van Poppel will ride the time-trial for the Dutch team.

Vos wants to ride the road race, the time-trial and the points race (on the track) at the Olympics but the national track selector doesn’t want that. Vos normally rides the time-trial in the nationals in order to get fit at the start for the points race. Vos doesn’t agree with this determination and is trying in several ways to enforce a start spot for her, so she can participate in all the three events.
