Commerce Bank Triple Crown - Philadelphia International Classic
24th "Philly" International: CSC's Young Gun  Matti Breschel with the fastest legs at the finish.

Team CSC's Matti Breschel score an impressive field sprint win at the end of Sunday’s 156-mile race. Americans Kirk O’Bee (Health Net-Maxxis) and Fred Rodriguez (Rock Racing) were second and third respectively in a race that lasted a record 6 hours, 14 minutes and 47 seconds.

Today's race saw temperatures rise from 79 degrees into the mid 90's with high humidity that had the organisers extending the feed zone time so the riders would be hydrated into the final two laps; the previous longest day was 6:13:53 set in 2006. The race once again had a high attrition with only 81 riders of the 190 starters able to finish.

CSC collected their second victory in the race with Breschel adding his name to the race palmares following team mate J.J. Haedo who won the race last year. The 23-year-old Breschel’s win also netted him top prize in the three-race series’ overall standings, dethroning 2007 champ Bernard Eisel, who was fourth on Sunday.“ I was too much in the wind at the end,” lamented Eisel, the Austrian High Road rider. “I just didn’t have enough left after such a long day in the heat.”

“I was all by myself on the last lap,” explained Breschel, who did not have the benefit of a full lead-out train like some of his competitors. “But I got myself in a good position going through [Logan Circle] and was able to make a long sprint to the finish.”

O’Bee estimated that the difference between first and second was about half a wheel, not much considering the race included 10 14.4-mile laps from the start-finish along Benjamin Franklin Parkway to Manayunk and back, plus three shorter circuits that went as far as Lemon Hill before circling back.

“It was a crazy last lap,” explained O’Bee, who was contesting his eighth Philadelphia race. “As soon as I exited the last round-about, my teammate John Murphy led me up the left side and took me all the way to the 200-meter-to-go sign. I took it from there and almost had it, but I probably went a little early and Breschel was able to come over the top of me.”

“I went through so many water bottles I lost count,” explained Davide Frattini (Colavita-Sutter Home), who won the day’s King of the Mountain title.

The race was animated by attacks from the gun with Daniel Vaillancourt (Toshiba/Santo p/b Herbalife) and Team CSC's André Steensen launched early into the first lap but by the start/finish area the two thought better than tackling the remaining 140 miles on their own. The continued with breaks large and small that couldn't gain traction as the heat continued to rise.

The break of the day came on the third lap when Ed King (Bissel) was caught by a chase group to form seven man escape that had promise: Colavita/Sutter Home's Davide Frattini  Brian Jensen (Team Successfulliving), Dan Ramsay (Time), Ben Kneller (Jittery Joe’s), Richard Geng (Rite Aid) and Tyler Hamilton (Rock Racing).

The group built a gap of 3 minutes in short order and went to a max of 8:30 by the middle of the race. But with the heat and miles ahead the odds were against the early escape. Kneller and Geng lost touch with the break with about 70 miles of racing remaining; by then the group had lost its edge and with six laps to go the surviving quintet were down to 1:10. The remaining 5 were picked off in the next circuit.

As the peloton reformed Team Type I Kiwi Glen Chadwick led an attack joined by Canadian Svein Tuft (Symmetrics) and Mexican Francisco Matamoros (Tecos-Trek). The three held the peloton at bay gaining a max advantage of over two minutes as the gap slowly faded with the peloton on their heels as they entered first of the three final shorter circuits.

With ten miles to go the three were down to 40 seconds and then swept up by the chase led by High Road, Rock Racing and Sparkasse teams. Tuft was the last to be collected as he attacked over Lemon Hill collecting the points, but the heat and miles in his legs put paid to any chance he stay away.

Attacks and counters continued with the now diminished peloton of 70 rider spread out across the 4 lanes of the finish flying for the line. Breschel proved the fastest at the finish by a wheel with Health Net's Kirk O'Bee (USA National Criterium champion) second and Fast Freddy Rodriguez of Rock Racing a flash of lime green as he took third.
