Euskal Bizikleta 2008 - Stage One Updated

The Euskal Bizikleta / Bicicleta Vasca stage race, downgraded to a three-day event with just 104 riders in attendance (not exactly an all star cast) and no Individual TT this year, kicked off Friday with a challenging trip of 154.5 kilometres - four categorised climbs included - around the seaside village of Bakio in the Bizkaia province. Winner of the race opener was Spain's Daniel Moreno, the 26-years-old man from Madrid who prevailed in a small bunch sprint of about ten riders and finished off the excellent job done by his squad Caisse d'Epargne basically throughout the stage, also taking the overall leader's blue jersey.

A flurry of early attacks came until a breakaway of some 15 guys managed to go clear: Imanol Erviti (Spa - Caisse d'Epargne), Luis León Sanchez (Spa - Caisse d'Epargne), Ivan Gutiérrez (Spa - Caisse d'Epargne), John Lee Augustyn (SAF - Barloworld), Eros Capecchi (Ita - Saunier Duval-Scott), Massimo Codol (Ita - Acqua Sapone-Caffe Mokambo), David Garcia Dapena (Spa - Karpin-Galicia), Iban Mayoz Etxeberria (Spa - Karpin-Galicia), Antonio D'Aniello (Ita - Liquigas), Tomasz Marczynski (Pol - Liquigas), José Antonio Redondo Ramos (Spa - Andalucia-Cajasur), Manuel Calvente (Spa - Contentpolis-Murcia), José Herrada (Spa - Contentpolis-Murcia) and Ivan Melero (Spa - Orbea-Oreka SDA) managed to put over a minute into the pack.

But with two strong teams like Tinkoff and Euskaltel driving the chase, the breakaway had few chances to succeed. The escapees had the 35-strong first chasing group on their heels as the bell signalling the start of the final circuit was ringing: the advantage had been cut down to 25 seconds with still a good 30 kilometres to be covered. Eros Capecchi realized that and resolved to give it a try on his own on the Gaztelugatxe third category climb: the Italian quickly took about 20 seconds on (some of) his former breakaway companions and extended his lead over the peloton (that contained only one rider of "home side" Euskaltel-Euskadi, Igor Anton) up to the minute at the summit of the climb.

Most members of the breakaway were reeled in on the slopes of the last ascent of the day, the first category Alto de Sollube (km. 7.3) , but attacks and counter-attacks continued in (what was left of) the group, thinned down to 8-10 men. They couldn't stop the former Italian National RR Champion (in the junior class) from being the first one across the top of the climb though. Attempts to close down on him from José Iván Gutiérrez first, and Acqua & Sapone's Italian Luca Pierfelici later, proved pointless. Capecchi held on to a 20-second advantage at the KOM sprint, with about 15k to go.

Pierfelici in fact continued his pursuit of fellow countryman Capecchi, but as part of a first chase group of about a dozen riders that formed on the final descent to the line and featured also his teammate Max Gentili (GC winner back in the days of 2005) as well as Luis Pasamontes and Daniel Moreno (Spa - Caisse d'Epargne), Adrian Palomares (Spa - Contentpolis-Murcia), Giampaolo Caruso and Filippo Simeoni (Ita - Flaminia-Bossini), Jaume Rovira (Spa - Extremadura) and Igor Anton (Spa - Euskaltel-Euskadi). They managed to get across to the leader and, as soon as Capecchi was chased down (but his efforts won the young and talented Italian the KOM leader's jersey), the same Pierfelici put in his own solo attack and opened up some gap.

He gained a dozen seconds or so, but his hopes for glory vanished as more helpful riders joined the first chase group. Pierfelici fought bravely, but was swallowed as he got into the last kilometre of the stage. Fellow Italian Pippo Simeoni tried to surprise the front group but his late attack was covered with about 150 metres left, and it all came down to a small field sprint, with Daniel Moreno having the quickest legs and taking a comfortable victory from Julian Sánchez Pimienta and Giampaolo Caruso. Eros Capecchi, Jaume Rovira, Igor Anton, Luis Pasamontes, Filippo Simeoni, Max Gentili and Adrian Palomares filled on the other top ten spots of the day complete, whil poor Pierfelici had to be content with 11th place only at 02". The next peloton came in 01'15" back, but several more riders lost over three minutes to the winner, and basically all of their overall chances.

The Bicicleta Vasca resumes tomorrow with a ride of 162.7 kilometres both starting and finishing at Agurain. The first miles are tough enough, with the first category Opakua climb coming after 8 kilometres, but the second half of the stage is quite easy, making this leg one for the fastest wheels around.
