Sastre versus Moreau!

The Spanish rider Carlos Sastre (CSC Tiscali) complained bitterly about the actions and attitude of Christophe Moreau (Credit Agricole). The two clashed during the twelfth stage of the Tour of France, between Lannemezan and Plateau de Beille.

"He is a rider who respects no-one and is not respected himself. I did not touch him because I have far more experience than him, I went by him on the right and he threw a punch at me! I asked him what he thought he was doing and he tried to punch me again. The only thing I did was to try and restrain him from hitting me."

"For these reasons, I don't consider myself guilty of anything, although I am sorry the incident took place, if the judges are to sanction anyone it must be Moreau. They surely cannot sanction me because I did not touch him, I only tried to restrain him. I am a rider who is careful to respect other riders. I am not the first person who has had problems with Moreau. This is cycling not a boxing match!"

In tonight's official Communication of the Tour the judges seemed to agree with the Spaniard's version of events. Although Moreau seems to have been let off very lightly and his punches which were clear to see ignored.

The official judgement was:

Moreau (Fra): Two minutes punishment (drove into the wheel of Carlos Sastre).

Sastre (Esp): 10 seconds of punishment (pulling on another rider's jersey) plus 10 seconds (pushing a rider from another team).
