62nd Tour de Picardie - Stage 3 and Stage 4

Mark Cavendish may have made it look pretty simple, but the truth is that winning a professional race during your first season in the ProTour ranks is a rare and impressive achievement. However, on Sunday morning in Cayeux-sur-Mer, promising Cofidis youngster Jean-Eudes Demaret did exactly that, as the fastest man in a four-up sprint from a breakaway to shake up the Tour de Picardie overall standings once again, with only another short afternoon stage remaining.

The peloton were up bright and early for the 88.5km third stage between Grandvilliers and Cayeux-sur-Mer. At the first intermediate sprint in Fouilloy (13.5km), Sébastien Chavanel beat race leader Elmiger and Siedler to the three bonus seconds. Having kept things together for this clash, seven men were then allowed to get away: Loyd Mondory (Ag2r-La Mondiale), Martijn Tjallingii (Silence-Lotto), Pieter Rooijakers (Skil-Shimano), Jean-Eudes Desmaret (Cofidis), Kilian Patour (Slipstream-Chipotle-H30), Ignatas Konovalovas (Credit Agricole) and Jens Mouris (Mitsubishi-Jartazi). At the stage’s halfway mark, they could count on an advantage of 1’46”.

As the deficit was closed to 50 seconds twenty-five kilometres from the finish, Mondory, Tjallingii and Rooijakers decided to sit up to be engulfed by the peloton. Undeterred, the foursome in front worked well to hold off the pack, still enjoying a lead of thirty seconds 5km from the finish. In a very tight sprint for the line, which saw the top three battling side-by-side across the line, Demaret just edged out Mouris and Patour by little more than a wheel-width for his first victory with Cofidis. Moreover, the result meant that he jumped into the leader’s maillot.

Twelve seconds in arrears, Greg van Avermaet led in the bunch. Was it game over? Not quite, but Martin Elmiger and Séb Chavanel remained virtually the only men with real chances of deposing Demaret in the afternoon.

This may be Demaret’s first win as a neo-pro, but it is not his first in a high-ranking UCI race. While a stagiare with Francaise des Jeux last summer, the 1984-born Frenchman impressively won from a breakaway in the Tour du Poitou-Charentes; seemingly he received a better offer to turn pro with Cofidis after that showing! At the finish, the winner commented: “In the final part, we started looking at each other. Francis [van Londersele, his directeur sportif] told me I had a good chance of victory and asked me to remain focused. I really wanted to win but when I crossed the finish line, I wasn’t sure I had won. It’s a huge satisfaction for me and it show I have my place in the pack.”

Stage 4: Ault - Cayeux-sur-Mer, 95km
In the similarly-short afternoon stage from Ault to Cayeux, Cofidis did everything they could to ensure the overall title went to neo-professional Demaret. The breakaway, involving Brard, Frischkorn, Berges and Tombak, was caught a comfortable twenty-five kilometres from the line. At the second intermediate sprint, Sebastien Chavanel may have outsprinted Elmiger for three crucial seconds, but Demaret was up there in third to take a precious second and keep the lead on the road.

The one thing Cofidis couldn’t control was Sébastien Chavanel, the big threat to their plan. In the final few kilometres before the finish in Cayeux-sur-Mer, his Francaise des Jeux team-mates set him up, with Philippe Gilbert no less acting as poisson pilote, and the younger of the Chavanel brothers was only too keen to oblige. He shot across the line first to the stage win, six bonus seconds, and therefore the overall title by a mere second: all this gained in the last 500 metres of racing. Philippe Gilbert took second for his efforts, with Baden Cooke finishing third.
Though the outcome is a tad hard on Demaret and Cofidis, there was little else they could do to stop one of France’s most illustrious fast men. The youngster can still take heart from his stage win and runner-up placing, marking him out further as a bright French spark for the future.

Chavanel was unsurprisingly elated at his first and second - counting the general classement - wins of the year: "It’s a team victory. I was perfectly led out by Gilbert. We took off together in the final bend behind Hoste. I turned around and saw that the others were ten metres behind and I told Philippe “now’s the moment”. We cranked up the pace and finished together. It’s a real satisfaction and the proof that we can rely on sprinters to win races.” Chavanel also won a stage in last year's edition of the Tour de Picardie, sprinting across the line in Soissons ahead of everyone else.
