7th Tour of Qatar - Stage 2

Quick Step and Tornado Tom rip the peloton to shreads in the opening road stage.

Fastest in the opening TTT, Quick Step already had the leader’s jersey on the shoulders of Matteo Tosatto. However, in the Tour of Qatar’s first road stage, covering 137.5 kilometres from Al Zubarah to Doha Golf Club, they opted to follow the adage “attack is the best form of defence”. Just three kilometres from the start, the boys from Belgium got on the front and tore the peloton to shreads, buoyed by a roaring wind on their backs.

Riders in the storm
Ripping a group of twenty-four away from the rest of the field, Quick Step kept firing at the front, enjoying six riders in the leading echelon, including previous winners Cretskens and Boonen. Covering fifty-seven kilometres in a lightning-fast opening hour, a gap of 1’30” opened up to the pack. Meanwhile, Tom Boonen aided his overall cause by taking the second intermediate sprint ahead of Veelers and team-mate De Jongh.

Not content with the initial selection, there was another Quick Step-led acceleration 32 kilometres from the finish. This whittled the group down to thirteen hardened individuals, but Patrick Lefevre’s team still had five up there! The other members of the group were Danilo Napolitano (Lampre), Alexandre Pichot (Bouygues Telecom), Slipstream pair Chris Sutton and Magnus Backstedt and Silence-Lotto trio Greg van Avermaet, Jurgen Roelandts and Maarten Tjallinghi.

Boom Boom Boonen
The group resisted the chasing efforts and it came down to Tom Boonen to cap a dominant day for Quick Step, who had given a masterclass in selfless teamwork. In the sprint to the finish line, the Tour de France green jersey winner outgunned van Avermaet and Napolitano for his first victory of 2008. With just six other riders on the same time, the general classification was also given a thorough shake-up. Boonen now leads lead-out man De Jongh, with Greg van Avermaet third. Slipstream will be pleased with Chris “CJ” Sutton in fourth, while Silence-Lotto should be impressed by the performance of neo-pro Jurgen Roelandts, lying sixth overall.

Tom Boonen talked about the difficulties of the stage: “It was a very tough day… the wind was perfect to create a nice bazaar today. Immediately from the gun, the whole team attacked. There was a battle for 60 kilometres and then a big group returned and it calmed down, as the wind changed direction. Everyone was completely à bloque. It’s always like that here, but it’s better to attack before being put on the back foot. I stopped my season earlier [than usual] last year and I’ve done the same training, along with a lot of rest. This race was all I was thinking about before competing here. Still, I’d like to have a good margin of progression for the Classics to come. The road is long before my prioritised goals. I hadn’t expected to be 100% at the start of the season but here, you don’t have the choice.”
