US Gran Prix of Cyclocross
Mercer Cup presented by Knapp’s Cyclery
The premier cyclocross series is the US moves to New Jersey
this weekend with races three and four of the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross
presented by Crank Brothers at the Mercer Cup presented by Knapp’s Cyclery in
Mercer County Park, West Windsor, NJ.
“Coming off of an incredible first weekend in Louisville, the USGP is gearing
up once again for a great weekend of ‘cross action in Mercer County Park,” said
Bruce Fina, Executive Director, US Gran Prix of Cyclocross. “Thanks to the
support of Knapp’s Cyclery, Mercer County and the Mercer County Sports
Commission we can’t wait to bring the biggest show in cyclocross to New Jersey.”
A first-time USGP venue, the course is set up adjacent to a large lake in
Mercer County Park which should make for a windy weekend of racing. Similar to
the first two races in Louisville, the course will feature a fly-over and some
very technical areas. The distinguishing feature of the Mercer course is the
three long sand pits lined up in a row which will challenge the field the entire
weekend.
“In general, with the fly-over, sand and grass there is more than enough on
this course to make it very interesting,” added Fina. “Throw in the strong winds
coming off the lake and we're in for a great weekend of racing.” With less than
one month to go before Nationals, everyone is in midseason form and will be
looking to put themselves in a good position to compete for the USGP series
championship.
In the Elite men’s race, the rivalry continues between the ‘Big Four’ – the
teammates from Cyclocrossworld.com and Kona YourKey.com. USGP series leader Tim
Johnson will be looking to retain his leader’s jersey with a strong showing in
New Jersey. Teammate Jeremy Powers, who won the first USGP race in Louisville,
will be in the hunt as well. Looking to get back in the top spot will be the
boys from Kona-YourKey.com. Ryan Trebon and Barry Wicks will be battling it out
to stay in the hunt for the USGP jersey.
In the Elite Women's field, USGP leader Katie Compton will not be racing in
the Mercer Cup this weekend as she remains in Europe to compete in the World Cup
races. Her absence leaves the door open for her competitors to gain points in
the series standings. Vying for the series lead will be Georgia Gould, Lyne
Bessette, Wendy Simms and Alison Sydor.

US Gran Prix of Cyclocross presented by Crank
Brothers
Successfully Goes “Zero Waste”
Through partnerships with the series sponsors Clif Bar and Crank Brothers,
organizers of the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross presented by Crank Brothers have
successfully taken steps to make the series as environmentally friendly as
possible with the goal of making each event ‘Zero Waste.’ The goal of ‘Zero
Waste’ is to divert as much solid waste as possible from landfill or
incineration through recycling and composting efforts.
At each event in the six-race series, USGP organizers providing support and
mechanisms onsite to reduce the amount of trash produced. At each event, there
are multiple stations for recycling and composting with directional signs
letting spectators know which items go in each station. The series is also using
‘Greenware’ and other products at each venue that can be recycled or composted.
At the first series event in Louisville the zero waste efforts yielded a
75.6% diversion rate which translates to saving 2 trees, 918 kilowatt hours of
energy, 846 gallons of water, and diverting 3900 pounds of compost materials
from the landfill. Even with more than 5,000 spectators over the two day
weekend, the Louisville event yielded just 12 bags of trash.
“The US Gran Prix of Cyclocross is the premiere ‘cross series in the US but
our goal is to also take a leadership role in making our events environmentally
sustainable through our ‘Zero Waste’ implementation,” said Bruce Fina, Executive
Director, US Gran Prix of Cyclocross. “Clif Bar and Crank Brothers have done a
tremendous job of helping to drive this initiative and we have received
tremendous support from each municipality on our Zero Waste efforts.
“Clif Bar is proud to join the US Gran Prix organizers, Crank Brothers and
Eco-Cycle in the effort to reduce the waste generated by the USGP events,” said
Dylan Seguin, Clif Bar. “Once the Zero Waste system is in place and folks are
making the effort to reduce, recycle & compost it’s eye-opening how much waste
can truly be eliminated. It’s great to see athletes and an event like the USGP
working together on a sustainability effort like this.”
Team Clif Bar’s Ben Turner added, “Zero Waste is a core belief of Team Clif
Bar’s "sustainable cycling" mission. Louisville really embraced the Zero Waste
idea and helped us achieve a 75% diversion rate -- meaning only 25% of the total
waste generated ended up in the landfill.” USGP of Cyclocross presenting sponsor
Crank Brothers is extremely supportive of the efforts being made by the Series
and Team Clif Bar.
"We are thrilled to see that both the Series that we support and Team Clif
Bar have taken such a leadership role in this area,” said Christina Orlandella,
Crank Brothers. “Crank Brothers is supporting this effort by donating the first
$2,000 in sales of Crank Brothers merchandise at the USGP to offsetting the cost
of implementing this Zero Waste initiative."
The Zero Waste efforts will also be implemented in the next two stops of the
USGP – Mercer County, New Jersey and Portland, Oregon. "Mercer County
Improvement Authority is proud to be a partner in the Zero Waste initiative of
the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross,” said Phillip Miller, Executive Director, Mercer
County Improvement Authority. “This innovative program complements what we are
implementing across Mercer County to reduce the amount of waste and increase
recycling/composting programs across the county."

Hutchinson Tubeless Ready Cyclo-Cross Tires Arrive Stateside
Hutchinson Outfits Team Redline with TUBELESS for Mercer Cup USGP
Hutchinson Tires announced today the arrival of the first shipment of new
Tubeless Ready Cyclo-Cross tires to their New Jersey warehouse. The new
technology - which has been peaking interest across the country during the prime
time of cross season - promises a more compliant, flat free ride from a
tubeless, clincher type cyclo-cross tire.
Hutchinson’s French tire production facility has been working feverishly to
produce the first production batch of the tires and fresh out of the molds, the
tires were shipped to Hutchinson North America’s headquarters in Trenton, NJ.
Dealers will be able to order the new rubber from Quality Bicycle Products as
well as a host of other Distributors as early as next week.
The date and location of the Tubeless Ready CX tires arrival is significant
because the nation’s best cross riders will be converging on the Trenton area
this coming weekend to contest the 3rd and 4th rounds of the Crank Brothers USGP
at Mercer Park. Fittingly, Team Redline which has been running Hutchinson’s
standard clincher cross tires this season will be the first to put the Tubeless
Ready CX tires through their paces in competition, just down the road from
Hutchinson’s North American headquarters.
The Piranha CX is a semi slick fast rolling tire with low-profile central and
cornering knobs and is best used on dry and smoother terrain. The Bulldog CX
features a more aggressive tread and is intended for softer muddier ground where
traction is a priority. The new tires will feature the same specs as the
standard clincher tires with the one exception being the bead. In an effort to
provide riders with an opportunity to ride lower pressure and suppler tires
without the difficulty of gluing tubulars, Hutchinson will equip the new Piranha
CX and Bulldog CX Tubeless Ready cyclo-cross tires with a tubeless bead of the
same shape as Hutchinson’s Road Tubeless tires. The tires can be used as a
standard tube-type tire or as tubeless using Shimano Dura Ace SL wheels with the
addition of Hutchinson’s Fast’Air latex sealant.
Team Redline Roster
Kristi Berg from Seattle, WA - Elite Woman
Kevin Bradford Parish of Spokane, WA - Elite Men
Jacob Rathe of Beaverton, OR - Junior Men
Chad Berg of Seattle, WA - Master Men—Team Helper
Dan Norton of Roslyn, WA - Master Men
Logan Owen of Bremerton, WA - Junior Boys
