Peter Velits of Slovakia won the  U-23 road race in a decisive sprint finish by a bike length over Wesley Sulzberger of Australia and Brit Jonathan Bellis. From the beginning the race was hotly contested as expected. A three man break becoming the defining break of day composed of Andreas Frisch (Denmark), Jacques Van Rensburg (South Africa) and Serbian Esad Hasanovic who gained a maximum advantage of 4 minutes. Hasanovic faltered in the fourth lap and was dropped and later absorbed. The field who showed little interest in bringing the remaining duo back with one exception, Kenyan rider Christopher Froome who spent the day chasing the two riders hanging in no man's land for the better part of the race coming close but was caught as the peloton turned serious in chasing the escape down having reduced the gap to under two minutes with 79 km of the 172 kilometer race.

With 4 laps and 78 km to go the peloton had the scent of blood in the water having closed the gap to below a minute as the lead trio began to fall victim to the chase. South Africa's Van Rensburg was the first to fall victim of his early effort as Danish rider Frisch fought on alone as the peloton closed in for the kill. Luckily an attack by Pirazzi of Italy, Mickael Larpe (France) and Simone Geschke of Germany was latched on to by the Rensburg and Frisch as they passed and the break gained new blood in avoiding capture... for a little while at any rate as the peloton closed on the five with 62 kilometers to go Pirazzi thought better and lit out on a solo break.

Stefano Pirazzi gained 30 seconds as the gap started to close after almost 3 hours of racing  he was joined by Lithuanian Ignatus Konovalos as his gap dropped to 17 seconds with 56 km to go; both of the riders were captured as their as another attack was launched as they entered the penultimate lap and 38 km to go.

Slovakian Peter Velits' attack was joined by Hollands Lars Boom, Slovenian Simon Spilak and Estonian rider Rein Taaramae and Dane, Jakob Fuglsang chasing the lead duo as the peloton shattered and stretched to the limit with riders dropping off the back in chasing groups. As the riders entered the final lap with 19 km to go the escapees swelled to five riders but the 45 seconds gained went up in smoke as the lead group caught them with 12 km from the finish. Behind the peloton was in hot pursuit to bring it down to a field sprint with the Norwegian team aiding the chase for their sprinter Edvald Boasson Hagen.

Julien Simon of France attacked and was joined by Russian Ivan Rovny who at first dueled and then worked together but with the kilometers ticking down to a sprint finish the due were captured with 4 km to go as counter attacks rained on the front of the peloton and were denied by the fast moving group of about 40 survivors

Approaching the line with the full field in array Martin Kohler of Switzerland tangled with the barriers and race favorite Edvald Hagen bit the dust in his wake as Peter Velits took the victory by a bike length, Australia's Wesley Sulzberger of Australia second and Brit Jonathan Bellis 3rd giving the British Commonwealth two riders on the podium.
