First Riders Out of Tour...UPDATED
Tom Steels (Mapei-QuickStep), current Belgian National Champion became is the first rider to abandon the Tour de France. Steels has been suffering through the first four stages of the race and finally decided to hang his wheels.

Meanwhile Italian Marco Pinotti (Lampre) was taking to hospital after he went down with another 20 riders in a crash some 20kms from the finish. The Lampre rider was the only one who didn't remount, after race doctors treated him (cut chin) and decided he was in need of more care.

So after five stages, the Tour claims its first two victims today.

We wish both riders a prompt recovery.
