Slipstream's Will Frischkorn Easily Wins Souderton Stage

With about 30 km to go, Will Frischkorn (Slipstream Chipotle) broke from a leading break that included team mate Timmy Duggan, Columbian John Fredy Para (Tecos de la University Autonome de Guadalajara) and a young Category One amateur rider, Phil Gaimon (CRCS Sakonnet). He was able to build a gap of over 3 minutes for an easy win in today's Souderton stage.

In second, Ryan Roth seemed to come out of nowhere, finishing in 4:21:41. The Canadian, who rides for the Kelly Benefit Strategies Medifast team, was down almost a lap when he came into Souderton for the final 13 laps on a three-mile circuit. Roth caught everyone but Frischkorn in the final lap but crossed the line with little fanfare, since everyone except the Canadian and his team thought he was behind by one lap. Instead, the crowd anxiously waited for a sprint between Columbian John Fredy Parra riding for the Mexican Team Tecos (sponsored locally by Alderfer Auction), and Frischkorn’s teammate, Timmy Duggan of Boulder, Colorado. Parra jumped ahead of Duggan with a huge sprint and finished third in 4:22:22.

“I was quite a ways down when I entered the circuit,” said Roth, who was over seven minutes off the leaders when he rode into Souderton. “I just rode steady and hard and started to gain time. I wasn’t expecting to take back all that time. At the end, chunks were just coming off.”

"I was on the wheel of Duggan and then I attacked to take over before the line," Parra said with regards to the race between himself and the two Slipstream riders. "It was very difficult and I knew that I wouldn't be able to win. But my goal was to be able to beat one of them."

The final man in the four-man lead break, CRCA Sakonnet’s Phil Gaimon of Tucker, Georgia, stayed with Parra and Duggan until the final three miles, then fell off the pace to finish seventh overall. Gaimon came away with the Landis Supermarket Young Rider Award for the best finisher 23 years old or younger.

Frischkorn was part of an initial break of eight riders that rode away from the peloton just over six miles into the 107.3-mile race. Frischkorn and Duggan pacing on the hilly course took a toll on the peloton. At the final King of the Mountains sprint, Frischkorn and Duggan attacked, splintering the lead group. By the time the lead group, then reduced to four, and assorted chase groups, reached the finishing circuit, they had gained such a large gap that officials pulled the peloton from the course. The main peloton of more than 60 riders was deemed outside the time cut and were prevented from entering the finishing circuits.

"Our director wanted us to start attacking with eight or nine laps to go," Duggan said. "It worked out for us and Will was working really hard out there on his own. I was really and truly impressed with the Teco's rider. Every time I attacked he was right on my wheel and I don't think I had the best acceleration in the end."

Roth attributed his efforts in taking back a lap to his Time Trialing ability and the motivation from Mark Walters (Kodak-Sierra Nevada). "When we entered the circuits we were a lap down on the front group of four and that was the first group that we saw," said Roth. "But Mark Walters and I kept going by them, not expecting that we would take a whole lap. The time gap to them kept dropping and my director Jonas told us that there were two laps to go and to really try to catch that lead group from behind."
