Riders' Comments After Stage Two

Oscar Freire: "I didnít come into the Tour with the best form but I felt very good on the stage. I was well positioned for the sprint thanks to the work of my team, particularly Horrillo and Hunter, and I wasnít expecting to win a stage at all until I got into that position.

"Itís great to beat Zabel, especially in front of his home fans but Iím not really bothered about whoís behind me, the main thing is to win. I really only came to the Tour to improve my condition for the classics in August but itís great to add a Tour stage to my world championship and Vuelta victories.

"Iím still getting lots of offers from teams, Spanish as well as foreign. But itís not very likely that I will ride in Spain next year. This is the first sprint win by a Spanish rider for who knows how long, they are just not set up for a rider like me."

Erik Zabel: "It was a difficult stage today, and McEwen and Freire were simply too quick for me at the end. But the good thing is that I wore the green jersey into SaarbrŁcken and kept hold of it."

Rubens Bertogliati: "It was a very special feeling for me at the start today. Lance Armstrong came up to me and congratulated me on my win and wished me all the best for the day. Itís amazing to be recognised by such a great champion."
