Young Guns: 36th Freccia dei Vini Photo Gallery. Part 1

July, the Tour de France month, began with one of Italy's toughest young gun single-day events, the "Freccia dei Vini / Memorial Luigi Raffele", organised by GS Orga Sport and the local team Viris Vigevano. Its 36th edition, attended by about one hundred riders from sevral different nations and teams, covered some 175 kilometres from Vigevano to a hamlet called Montý Beccaria in the "deep south" of Lombardy. We were there, and our cameras too. Below are the results of our "photo safari". Click the links at the bottom of the page for part two and part three of the photo gallery. Race report and results can be found here instead.

Also this year, the first Sunday of July, Vigevano's Piazza Ducale
(nicknamed "The Lounge of Italy") played host to the start of the event.

that built such wonder) dating back to 1492,
the same year Columbus crossed the pond.

Half an hour past noon at Piazza Ducale,
and the battle gets started under the sun...

Albeit the real starting shot of the event
was fired later, in Vigevano's Corso Pavia.

But the guy doesn't seem Danilo Di Luca to me, does he?

Three laps of a urban circuit followed, with as many sprints.
The first was taken by Ralf Malosti (Pregnana cycling team).

The second went to Vitaliy Popkov (L)
from Italy's Giovanni Carini (R).
The Ukrainian claimed also the third one
and the Trofeo Bazzigaluppi classification.
