Giro d'Italia Femminile - Roundup on Prologue to Stage 2

The stage race started in mourning. A few days ago Liane Bahler (Fenixs-HPB) died after a car accident while driving to the airport. Liane was scheduled to ride this stage race for the Fenixs team. She died at an age of 25.

Prologue - Crocetta del Montello, 3 km

The prologue in the Giro Donne was 3 km long in distance in the streets of Crocetta del Montello. Defending champion Edita Pucinskaite (Equipe Nürnberger) started where she finished last year, with a win. Karin Thürig (Raleigh) finished second and Susanne Ljungskog, winner of the Emakumeen Bira and the Tour de L'Aude, finished as 3rd. Charlotte Becker and Zoulfia Zabirova completed the top 5.

Stage 1 - Riese Pio X - Pontecchio Polesine, 150.6 km

Stage 1 was 150.6 km long in distance between Riese Pio X and Pontecchio Polesine. The Giro D'Italia for men finished about 1 month ago in Riese Pio X, and it was Alessandro Petacchi who won the sprint ahead of Richeze and Breschel. As you can see that was a bunch sprint, something which is to be expected in this stage for the woman as well.

The stage was animated by Alessandra D'Ettore (Saccarelli Emu Sea) and Miho Oki (Menikini Gysko). They rode in the lead for about 65 km with a maximum lead of about 1.30. But with about 10 km to go the bunch reeled them in. The stage ended up in a bunch sprint and it was Giorgia Bronzini (Safi-Pasta Zara) who won the stage. Former World Champion Regina Schleicher finished 2nd and Estonian champion Grete Treier 3rd. Vos and Corazza completed the top 5.

Edita Pucinskaite remains in the lead.

Stage 2 - Correggio/Rio - Correggio, 125.7 km

Stage 2 was 125.7 km long in distance between Correggio and Rio-Correggio. Suzie Godart (Fenixs), the champion of Luxembourg, didn't start anymore. The stage was animated in the beginning by Adrie Visser (DSB Bank), Maja Adamsen (Dila Guerciotti) and Elodie Touffet (Menikini). But there break didn't took long. Than Julia Martisova (Team FRW-Gauss) tried her luck but her break ended with less than 2 km to go.

The stage ended up in a sprint and it's World Champion Marianne Vos (DSB Bank) who won the stage. Diana Ziliute is 2nd and Oenone Wood 3rd. After rank 7 there was a small gap. Due to that we have a new leader and some of the GC riders lost 5 valuable seconds

Diana Ziliute (Safi-Pasta Zara) is the new leader in the ranking. She has 6 seconds on Chantal Beltman and 7 sec. on Oenone Wood, both of T-Mobile.

Tomorrow the woman will lineup for the most important stage of the Giro, the Individual Time Trial. It's a mountain TT over 10,2 km. It will definitely shuffle the GC.
