D.S.'s Matteo and Pietro Algeri led the "Red Birds"
Saunier Duval/Prodir to an outstanding performance at the Giro as the Top Team.
Giuseppe Saronni's Lampre/Fondital lads rode a consistent race to win the Super
Team Classification based on points.

The Saunier Duval team in the yellow
jerseys may not have won the Maglia Rosa but the squad could leave finished the
Giro with a record of a strong performance this year and collected the the well-deserved overall leadership in the Team
General Classification, this was their first triumph as a team in one of the Grand Tours.

But the spoils of
war didn't end there for the team coached by Matteo and Pietro Algeri, the team
scored individual accomplishments too: four stage wins Leonardo Piepoli (stage
10), Riccardo Riccò (stage 15), Gilberto Simoni on the Zoncolan (stage 17), and
a return to glory by Iban Mayo (stage 19)- and six second
spots, two men among the top ten G.C.: Simoni, 4th, and Riccò, 6th, second place for Riccò in the Young Rider Classification, and Piepoli´s "Maglia
Verde" in the King of the Mountains competition.
In an after Giro press release the team were quick to acknowledge their
technical sponsors, "Thanks to the meticulous work carried out by the team's
mechanics and the outstanding quality of their equipment, there weren't any
technical problems during the Italian tour's three weeks. The mechanics didn't
get out of the car throughout the entire 3,400-km long race, and Saunier
Duval/Prodir suffered ZERO punctures in Italy! Thanks to their magnificent job,
our mechanics and partners have been the final GC leaders in their own
category."

17:40; 38. Mayo (SDP) at 1:12:01; 59. Cañada (SDP) at 1:50:08; 80. "Litu" Gómez

As a result the team climbed a few steps higher in the UCI ProTour
Team Ranking to third behind Team CSC and Liquigas in the leading positions.

Super Team Classification

Giuseppe Saronni's lads in the blu and fuscia jerseys led by former Giro winner
Damiano Cunego won the Super Team Classification based on cumulative points that
tipped the scales with 44 points over Liquigas and Ceramica Panaria/Navigaria.
A consistent showing in the daily classifications of the Lampre team and
especially Marzio Bruseghin (8th), a stage win and several top ten finishes
including 5th in the Stage 20 time trial by Danilo Napolitano, Damiano who
finished fifth on the G.C. veteran Paxti Villa finished 15th to give the lads
three riders in the top 15.

Stage 1 Team Time Trial Podium. Enrico Gasparotto was the first recipient of the
Maglia Rosa as his sprinters instincts took over and he led the team sprinting
to the finish. But it didn't take long for Enrico to pass it on to Danilo Di
Luca the final winner of the jersey. Gasparatto could switch into the best young
riders Maglia Bianca a competition he finished in 24th in Milan.

Liquigas and Danilo Di Luca rode a consistent and tactically strong race from
the start of the Team Time Trial which they won over Astana by 13 seconds and
time trial powerhouse and number one ranked team CSC by 30 seconds. From that
day on Team Liquigas only relinquished the Maglia Rosa for three days to
T-Mobiles Marco Pinotti after a brilliant attack on the first mountains test to
catapult into the race lead.
