11th Tour of Japan - Stage 4

Kazakh Valentin Iglinskiy has regained the lead in the 11th Tour of Japan, taking both the stage win and green leader's jersey.

Stage 4, the south Shinshu circuit ride, consisted of 12 hilly laps through a lush forest and riding next to the Tenryu River. With 10 laps to go three riders, Koji Fukushima (Nippo Corporation), Akira Kakinuma (Team Miyata) and South African Herman Fouche (Team Konica Minolta)were able to build a 3 minute lead.

The break had two minutes with four laps to go when Fouche struggled and was soon swallowed by a group of 25 riders that broke off the front. This chasing group, did not include green jersey Passeron. The two Japanese breakaway riders were caught on the circuit's hilly section. Iglinskiy sprinted ahead of a large sprint group of 22 riders for another stage win in Matsuo Stadium. Acqua e Sappone did their best to protect Passeronhad who lost over 12 minutes.

Thursday, May 24th will be a rest day. Riders will be preparing for Friday's mountain time trial ascent of Mount Fuji, which is Japan's highest mountain. This will be an important test for the GC riders before the final hilly stage on Saturday.
