11th Tour of Japan - Stage 3

Francesco Masciarelli sprints ahead of Yukiya Arashiro to take win in historic Mino.

by Stephanie Gutowski

Today's stage took place in historic Mino, a city famous for its traditional paper (washi) mills. The course ran through the city's famous period homes district, the Yada market, and the Yada tunnel.

A breakaway including Andrea Rossi (Acqua e Sapone-Caffe Mokambo), Andrey Medyannikov (Kazakhstan National Team), Shinri Suzuki (Team Miyata) and Kazuya Okazaki (Nippo Corporation) occurred at the 100km mark. Okazaki then decided to escape with 50km remaining. He led the race until the final hill at 7km to go. The Kazakhstan National Team moved to protect the interests of their race leader Valentin Iglinskiy and caught Okazaki on the final climb.

The Acqua & Sapone riders chose to move into action and sent Alessandro Donati, Passeron and Masciarelli off the front. The three Acqua & Sapone riders were joined by Yukiya Arashiro (Nippo Corporation) and Yoshinori Iino (Pearlizumi Sumita Ravanello. The five riders were able to gain 11 seconds on the pursuing peloton. It was Masciarelli racing ahead ahead of Arashiro to win the stage.
