The stage began with violent rainfall and stormy winds which accompanied the
peloton during the 177 kilometers
of the stage. After 65 kilometers, three riders attacked and broke
away from the main field. Those riders participating in the main field were, Lars Wackernagel
(Team
Sparkasse),Christian Pömer (Team
Volksbank), and Mariusz Witecki (Team
Volksbank) and at one point held
an advantage 4:20 minutes before they were absorbed by the field. Lars
Wackernagel (Team
Sparkasse) efforts would not go unrewarded as he was awarded the KOM jersey. 20
km before the finish, former U23 World Champion of Hamilton, Sergey Lagutin
(Navigators Insurance Cycling Team) attacked. The chase in the bunch came too
late and the rider from Uzbekistan rounded off a break of 20 km and won the
stage with an advantage of 16 seconds on the bunch. Steffen Radochla won the
sprint for second ahead of Gerald Ciolek. Ed Beamon, the Director Sportif of the
Navigators team said, "We had a
very solid performance by the team today as Lill launched a serious attack on
the first climb, and later the team chased back a critical break they had
missed. In the end, Lagutin was very strong."
