Giro d'Italia - Lampre/Fondital Team Preview
Damiano Cunego leads the team in blue and fuscia jersey with a talented team to support him in his quest for his second Giro win. Team tests the TTT course.

Lampre/Fondital will bring the golden boy of Italian cycling with them to this year's Giro D'Italia. Damiano Cunego knows what it takes to win this race, after all he won the Giro in 2004 at the tender age of 22. He hasn't been able to regain form in the past few years, but he is still a major contender for the maglia rosa. Last year Cunego won the best young rider classification at the Tour de France, in addition to that honor he won the Giro del Trentino, Settimana Ciclistica Internazionale, and the GP d'Oro. Cunego has already won the Giro del Trentino this year, and he is one of the favorites to be in pink at the end of the 90th edition of the corsa rosa.

Once again Damiano and former Saeco teammate Gilberto Simoni will battle for the final line honors in Milan after the historic battle of 2004. The victory of 2004 had the "Little Prince" picked as the "Cyclist of the year." This year the two Italians may give us another epic battle with both bringing able teams to support their quest for the home victory.

Danilo Napolitano will handle the sprinting duties for the Lampre squad. The 26-year old Italian has already won a stage in the Vuelta a Murcia, in addition to his seven wins in 2006. Napolitano is a bit of a dark horse for the best sprinter classification, but he has the skill to sneak past the major contenders. Alessandro Petacchi, Robbie McEwen, and Paolo Bettini better keep an eye out for this young Italian.

Lampre will bring a strong support squad that includes Marzio Bruseghin, Giampaolo Caruso, and Paolo Tiralongo. Cunego will stop at nothing to get to the podium, and I believe this course suits his abilities, it is very likely he will find himself on the podium, and maybe even his second Giro win.

Matteo Bono the 23 year old from Iseo, Italy is fresh from the Tour de Normandie where he won the third stage which was his second win this year after the stage 6 win at Tirreno Adriatico and third in Klasika Primavera. His climbing talents will be part of the support that the little prince will be able to call on in the second half of the Giro. If this isn't enough, the squad has Paxti Vila, Sylvester Szmyd, and Paolo Tiaralongo and 26 year old 2004 Baby Giro winner Marco Marzano each talented climbers who can launch Damiano and capable of a top 20 G.C. placing.

First day in Sardinia for Lampre-Fondital's
Cyclists arrive that will take part in 90th Giro d'Italia.
On Wednesday night the athletes landed on Olbia airport, then this morning they trained for more than three hours on the parcours of the team time trial that will start the Giro

"I think it's a nice parcour, various and not so easy - Cunego's commented about the team time trial - There are a many bends, cimbs and downhills, there are almost no straights or planes".

"Lampre-Fondital could realize a good performance - Tiralongo said - The skill in riding the bike will be very important".

On Friday afternoon is scheduled the official presentation of the teams: for sure Lampre-Fondital and its captain Cunego will receive many applauses.

Wilier Triestina Cento Crono bikes for the Lampre Squad
For the Team TT that opens the 90th Giro d’Italia on Saturday May 12 (24 km from Caprera to La Maddalena), Wilier Triestina has provided Lampre Fondital with its highest technology. Damiano Cunego and his team mates will ride CENTO CRONO, the aerodynamic version of Wilier’s top-of-the-range model.

The carbon monocoque frame weighs 1400 grams, while the Aero fork weighs 390 grams. The average overall weight is 8,35 Kg. The frames have been built with a large employ of very high module carbon fibres (T60). The bikes are equipped with Campagnolo Record grouppo, Fulcrum wheels and ITM Nivola handlebar.
