Young Guns News Roundup #17A (05/06/2007)

This latest report on the stars of tomorrow is focused on races held in Italy and Spain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, all of which were single-day events, the traditional GP Villareal aside.

The orange warriors of Pagnoncelli-NGC Perrel moved en masse southward to the Marche region of Italy for their Saturday battle going under the name of 18th Memorial Secondo Marziali and featuring an uphill finish, and they took no prisoners: Luca Gasparini was first across the line at Monte Urano, near Ascoli Piceno, earning his first win of the season, and Bruno Rizzi climbed the podium as third place getter. Sandwiched in between was Fabio Taborre of Aran World-Cantina Tollo, who made the gap alongside the Pagnoncelli duo, but proved unable to follow Gasparini as the boy from Verona attacked on the final ascent to the line. The Pagnoncellis made their triumphal ride complete as Matteo Scaroni finished in fifth, straight ahead of Ivan Basso's cousin Alessandro Raisoni.

After failing several attempts by a whisker, he finally succeeded in making the difference and clinching race victory. The Colombian Julián Dario Atehortua, born in Medellin in the year 1983 and raised in Bogotá, pulled off a surprise (he was surprised too) win in the 51st Gran Premio Industria Commercio Artigianato / 20th Trofeo Pietro Toltoti, whose start town - and finish town - was Botticino, near Brescia, and whose total distance was 130,854 metres on an undulating parcours, that the man from the Andes covered in two hours and 57 minutes, averaging 44.407 kph.

The race got off to a quiet start, disappointing all those hungry to see a flurry of early attacks. They had to wait until lap three of the circuit, and until km. 26, for the first breakaway of any significance to come, courtesy of the Italians Federico Redaelli (Team Schivardi) e Federico Pinton (Progetto Ciclismo - OTC Doors), later joined by sixteen more fugitives. Such 18-strong front group could not gain more than 47 seconds on the filed, and the race was back together during lap nine. Together they rode to the foot of the final climb to the line, the short but challenging Salita delle Cave: that was the place where the Colombian showed off all of his climbing abilities, riding clear of the peloton and retaining a seven-second advantage on the pack, led home by his own team-mate Gabriele Graziani, who gave the Caneva-San Marco-Concrete bosses one more reason to smile on Saturday evening. Fabrizio Galeazzi (Unione Ciclisti Trevigiani-Dynamon-Veneto Banca) denied Cesare Benedetti and riders and fans from the Brescia area a place on the podium.

Bernardo Riccio scored his hat-trick of victories this year as he took honours in the 10th Memorial Carlo Valentini at Camponogara near Venice (nine laps of a local circuit of 13.5 km). The Filmop-Sorelle Ramonda-Parolin athlete was the toughest in a very, very tight sprint at the end of a hotly-contested race, with plenty of attacks going despite the frantic pace set by the field – that eventually averaged over 47 kph. Bisello, Giantin, Pavarin, Bandiera, Bodmar, Piechele were the (last) names of some of the riders that stole the show with their early attempts, all of which were nullified. And the move Davide Beccaro and Davide Malacarne put in with two laps to go didn't have a better outcome. The peloton chased them down before the bell lap, then it was all about the sprinters teams getting their appointed fastmen into position, and Riccio pipping Enrico Cecchin, Manuel Belletti, Federico Masiero, Jacopo Guarnieri as well as the rest of the gruppo on the line.

Aran World Cantina Tollo could do nothing to stop the Pagnoncelli Armada at Monturano, but had better results against the Tuscan team Maltinti Lampadari-Solgomma in the 8th Coppa Comune di Castiglion Fiorentino on the outskirts of Florence this past Saturday. The race deservedly went to Ukraine's 23-year-old Alexander Surutkovych who broke clear along with seven more riders on the Valico della Foce slopes and had the best legs in the last, uphill 500 metres. Vittorio Scafuro and the Russian Alexei Esin tried to follow but had to settle for the less prestigious podium places.

Last but not least, here are the results of an unusual young gun event, an Individual TT: the Bracciale del Cronomen, held in the Bolzano / Bozen area of South Tyrol, in the far north of Italy, and dominated by Permac-Brisot-Bibanese, that got three guys in the top five places, one of whom was an Australian: Ryan Sullivan. The Chilean talent Carlos Oyarzun recorded his third win of the season in Thursday's 9th Trofeo San Segundo, a demanding challenge of 143 kilometre that was part of the Patron Saint celebrations in the magnificent city of Avila of Vuelta a España fame. The Latin-American, racing for the Castilla-based squad Diputación de Leon, soloed over the line after powering away on the Alto de Los Aguilones slopes, and increasing his advantage while climbing Navarrevisca and La Paramera, eventually crossing the line one minute eighteen seconds ahead of Spaniards Rafael Rodríguez and Josué Gutiérrez. Oyarzun captured also the King of the Mountains title, while Rodríguez's Viña Magna-Cropu finished atop the Teams classifications.

The Gran Premio Vila-real de Ciclismo, the oldest young gun race running in the northern side of the autonomus Valencian community in Eastern Spain, older than the same Vuelta a Castellón (see Roundup #14B) began Friday, May 04th. The 61st edition of such two-day event, consisting of a 148 kilometre trip from Villareal to Morella and a second stage going the other way around, kicked off with a foreign team in attendance for the first time. The presence of the Lokosphinx boys didn't go unnoticed at all, for it was a rider from the Russian squad that took line honours at Morella: Vladimir Schekunov beat his breakaway companion Vicent Perales (Spa - Cafemax) in an extremely tight sprint to clinch the stage and become first leader of the race. Russians also placed Alexander Rybakov in the stage top three as he crossed the line 20" behind his teammate/compatriot, while their Ukrainian neighbours had Serhyi Grechyn, racing for local side Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, in spot number four.

The weather gods had mercy on the 84 riders that lined up for the start in front of Villareal's Campeón Llorens sporting arena, and the rain many were expecting never showed up. It was good for the race, that saw attacks coming since the early kilometres, with the right breakaway of seven - containing both Schekunov and Perales - going even before they hit the first difficulty of the day, the Cat.1 Coll d'Ares. The escapees worked well together, and albeit the peloton cut the gap to just half a minute on the Ares slopes they managed to stay clear while climbing the second category Castellfort and the San Miguel ascent. Schekunov and Perales later attacked the front group and sped off on their own, and the duo made it to the finish. The Russian, born in Saint Petersburg in the year 1987 and in his first season in the U23 ranks, but already capable of making the news in Spain with his third place finish at Tour of Castellón, had the quickest legs in the two-man battle that decided the stage.

Vladimir Schekunov (Lokosphinx) and the Belgian Marcel Six (Comunitat Valenciana) shared glory in the second and last day. The latter claimed line honours in the 158 km. leg from Morella back to Villareal and the former retained his overall leadership all the way to the final podium. Schekunov and Perales ended in the same time, but the Russian won the GC based on his better finishing places. Lokosphinx basically kept the race under control since the flag was dropped Saturday, even if Antonio García (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia-Bancaja) infiltrated an early breakaway group of five riders and was overall leader on the road for some time as their advantage grew up to some two minutes by the km. 45 check. But the combination of efforts from the Russian-led peloton - that the fast pace set by Lokosphinx thinned down to about 20 riders only - and strong winds put end to all of their hopes: the attempt was nullified 15 km. from the finish line. The stage wasn't decided in a field sprint though, as Marcel Six made a smart and timely move in the very last part and held onto the smallest of margins over the bunch - led across the line by William Aranzazu of the local team Cosar-Costa del Azahar with Schekunov getting a crucial fourth place finish – thus taking his own season's tally, which is not bad at all, up to new heights.

Jonathan Castroviejo of the Seguros Bilbao squad won the San Gregorio Saria, Saturday's 138 kilometre round of the Torneo Euskaldun series, at Berriatua, a small town near San Sebastián in the Basque Country of Spain. The Spaniard beat breakaway companions Ismael Esteban (Cafés Baqué) and Carlos Juez (Bidelan-Kirolgi), with his own teammate Raúl Santamarta taking fourth. Joseba Larralde (Bidelan) led the next group across the line at 17 seconds.

The Catalan team Ditec-Costa Daurada, based in the city of Tarragona, dominated affairs in the Volta a Girona, an unusual "open" race that saw the Elite-2 and U23 guys up against athletes from other classes - like "Seniors" and "Masters" - and took the eighty contenders who crossed the line from Salt to Girona (the place that used to be the "home away from home" of Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie and other U.S. pro riders) over 114 kilometres. Ditec first drove the successful chase to the five-man "breakaway of the day", later made it clear to any wannabe late escapees that they wouldn't get any green light, and eventually took the bunch sprint it all came down to, courtesy of Joan Font, who finished off their excellent job. David Alcaraz and Carlos Herrero, racing for two other Catalan squads, completed the podium. Santi Prat (Freebike) won the Hot Spot Sprint title, while David Alier (Bici Equip) was the best ranked finisher of the "Masters" category and - needless to say - Ditec-Costa Daurada finished atop the team standings.
