Young Guns: GP Liberazione Cava Manara Photo Essay
 

The 29th Gran Premio Liberazione was held over a 116-km. route (11 laps of a small circuit) with the start line at Mezzana Corti and the finish at Cava Manara, both located near Pavia in the north of Italy, on Wednesday April 25th 2006. The contest was won by Davide Bonomi of Velo Club Matovani Rovigo ahead of Nicola Galli (Pool Cantů 1999-NGC-Tad Pharma) and Luca Rocchi (Cargo Embassy Larigiano). The finish line came at the end of a small ascent
and just a few dozen metres from a narrow arch, as you can see.
Hmmm, it wasn't the best place for a massive sprint, was it?
Thankfully nothing bad happened there.

Most of the bunch stayed together in the first laps (and later too).

Marco Zardetto broke away solo with about 15 miles to go and…

…the chase got underway, with Federico Togni in the driver's seat…

… but a group of six pursuers rode away from the peloton
and quickly got across to join the leader.


A wild bunch of fourteen was on the front
as the race made it to the last km. banner and the flambe rouge,
unusually located on one side of the road straight after a turn.
