Team CSC has former winner of Gent-Wevelgem in the line up as Lars Michaelsen
will be doing the race for the final time, and he explains the importance of the
timing in between the two great classics.
"I had some really great results early on in my career, and yes…I guess this
race was my biggest along with the first stage of Vuelta a Espana in 1997. At
the time it felt natural for me to aim for a good result in Gent-Wevelgem - it
suited me well, because I wasn't quite ready to battle it out with the big
profiles in Paris-Roubaix and Ronde van Vlaanderen," says
Michaelsen, who won the race in 1995 and was
among the top-20 four times over the following five years. After that the Danish
veteran has not had any major results in the race and he explains this with:
"After a while my focus shifted, so I concentrated more or less one hundred
percent on Paris-Roubaix, where I think I've accomplished a lot even though it's
a tougher race."
In spite of his crash on Sunday in "De Ronde" Michaelsen will be taking part
in Gent-Wevelgem again this year, where he might get another shot at winning,
when Team CSC arrives with yet another strong line-up. He himself points to
Stuart O'Grady as Team CSC's biggest favorite though and from other teams he
names Lampre's Daniele Bennati as the best bet.
"It's not until after the three big climbs, that you're able to tell exactly,
who the favorites are. The trick is to have as many riders as possible up front
on those climbs, and for those, who want to try and make it on their own, this
is also the place to attack," says Team CSC's sports director
Scott Sunderland and continues: "Stuart O'Grady
will probably be up front at the finish and if we get Matti Breschel and Juan
José Haedo up there with him, they'll also be in position for a bunch sprint -
and "JJ" has shown that he is in great shape at the moment with his victory in
Rund um Köln," says the Australian, who is very much looking forward to the race
with such a strong team.
"We have some strong riders in the line-up, but it's a very unpredictable
race though. I think the peloton will be as nervous as we saw on Sunday in Ronde
van Vlaanderen, because the weather reports say dry weather with no wind. This
could very well mean a gathered peloton heading for a bunch sprint at the end,"
finishes Sunderland.

another UCI Pro Tour event to unfold tomorrow in Belgian territory. The riders
that Pietro Algeri has selected for this competition are Jesús del Nero, Fran
Ventoso, Raivis Belohvosciks, Raúl Alarcón, Arkaitz Durán, Ángel "Litu" Gómez

Sporting director: Tristan Hoffman (37/Netherlands)
Following disappointment at Sunday’s Tour of Flanders, Hammond will be
looking to get a good result from Wednesday’s Gent-Wevelgem parcours, a race
that is predominantly flat, but famous for energy-sapping head-winds that blow
in from the north-sea coast.
Hammond commented: “Not finishing at the Tour of Flanders was obviously
disappointing for me but it means I will be even more determined as I go into
tomorrow’s race alongside my T-Mobile Team-mates. It’s a very different type of
event from the Tour of Flanders and is likely to throw up a host of new
challenges as well as being a great warm-up for Paris-Roubaix this Sunday.”
Leading the team out in Belgium will be Marcus Burghardt, Andreas Klier and
Bernhard Eisel, with sporting director Tristan Hoffman confident that all three
have the condition to “take their chances” no matter how the race unfolds.
Burghardt, 13th in Meerbeke on Sunday, is T-Mobile’s best bet for a top-placing
in Wevelgem, but Klier is also closing in on his best form following the
training crash that ruined his build-up to the Tour of Flanders. Rounding out
the eighth-man roster in Belgium are Eric Baumann, Greg Henderson, Servais
Knaven and Lorenzo Bernucci.
