22nd Clásica Almería

Giuseppe Muraglia (Acqua & SIapone) won Sunday's 22nd edition of the Clásica Almería one-day race, running from Puebla de Vicar to to Andlausian city of Almería over 186 km. The Italian had faster legs than Russian Eduard Vorganov (Karpin Galicia) and Spain's Vicente Ballester (Fuerteventura-Canarias) and Juan Olmo (Andalucía-Caja Sur) in the four-man sprint theat determined the winner.

Many attacks came very early into the race, and a breakaway group of 13 riders formed on the second ascent of the day, the Cat. 3 Alto de Las Hortichuelas. Among the escapees were Iñigo Landaluce, Joan Horrach and David Millar, but all were chased don in the next climb Campohermoso. More moves followed, with the same Landaluce, Ramón Troncoso, Juan Olmo and Italian Andrea Masciarelli as main protagonists. But the good one came with just 30 km. to go, as Vorganov, Olmo, Ballester and Muraglia rolled off the front of the field and made it to Almería's Federico García Lorca Avenue, which hosted the finishing line.

Danilo Napolitano tried more than once to join the leading quartet, but his solo attempts didn't come to fruition. The line honors were a matter of four riders only. Vorganov had a shot at taking his breakaway companions by surprise with a wicked attack 2 km. from the finish, but he didn't succeed. Neither did later moves from Olmo and Ballester. Such that in the end it was 1979-born Muraglia, a pro since the 2003 season, who had the freshest legs, and showed it in the final straight.
