Nicole Cooke (Raleigh Lifeforce Creation) has won the 1st World Cup race of
the season in Geelong. After the final win in the Geelong Women's Tour it's
already the second season win for Nicole. Oenone Wood was 2nd, Nikki Egyed 3rd,
Ina-Yoko Teutenberg 4th and Angela Brodtka 5th.
There was action from the start. But in the second lap of break of eleven riders
got away. It's a solid breakaway of eleven, including Carla Ryan (Queensland
Academy of Sports), Natalie Bates (NSW Institute of Sport), Kate Nichols (Australian
National Team), Sarah Düster (Raleigh Lifeforce Creation Team), Linda Villumsen
(T-Mobile), Loes Markerink (Team Flexpoint), Edita Pucinskate (Equipe Nürnberger),
Sigrid Corneo (Menikini Gysko), Alison Powers (Colavita/Sutter Home presented
by Cooking Light), Melissa Holt (BikeNZ New Zealand National Team) and Jessie
Maclean (Landlink Cycling Team).
The maximum lead of the break was around the four minutes before T-Mobile started
to ride. In the 6th lap Carla Ryan and Kate Nichols attacked from the break,
while T-Mobile was still chasing in order to get a bunch sprint. The maximum
gap of Ryan and Nichols was 30 seconds. But in the final T-Mobile chased them down.
T-Mobile's Oenone Wood attacked after the break was caught but without success.
On the final climb of the day it was Raleigh Lifeforce rider Nicole Cooke who
attacked, with Wood the first to respond. The Australian National Team started
the chase and there rider Nikki Egyed bridged the gap, so we got a break of
three riders.
The race ended up in a sprint with these three riders and it was Nicole Cooke
who took the win. Teutenberg won the sprint of the bunch for 4th place.
The Women's peloton now heads to New Zealand for race two of the World Cup series.
