9th GP Chiasso - Just In

Tinkoff Credit Systems youngster Pavel Brutt has won the 9th GP Chiasso, the first race of a double-header of tough weekend action in the Swiss hills. The Russian finished centimetres ahead of in-form veteran Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) and Luca Mazzanti (Panaria-Navigare), from an eight-up sprint.

On a hilly course, won in the past by the likes of Kim Kirchen, Franco Pellizotti and Davide Rebellin himself (in 2001), the decisive break was made on one of the last climbs, after a race littered with attacks. Post-race, Brutt said "Yes, it's a great victory and I have three big thank-yous to say: the first goes to all the squad, to my teammates, who were really fantastic. The second goes to Oleg Tinkov, who believed in me: he believed I could have an important place in this squad. The last thank you goes to Orlando Maini, Claudio Cozzi and Dmitri Konyshev, the Tinkoff directeur sportifs, who knew how to guide me perfectly [to victory] in this situation."
Brutt has already tasted victory champagne this year, winning the ninth stage of the Tour of Langkawi on the way to seventh overall.

Certainly, Tinkoff Credit Systems have had a superb start to the seasons, with wins and top-three finishes in almost every race they've entered. Moreover, it's been the young Eastern European guns who have shone as much as, if not more than, the established names. If they keep this up though, men like Pavel Brutt, Vasili Kiryienka and Mikhail Ignatiev will be the established names in the squad. Their invitation to the Giro d'Italia is looking more and more deserving with every passing race.
