65th Vuelta Valenciana - Stage 5 Live Coverage
Valencia-Valencia

Hello everyone and welcome to our live coverage of the fifth and final stage in the 65th Tour of Valencia. After yesterday's battle on the Alt de Campello final climb to the line, with Discovery's Alberto Contador powering to a spectacular victory and Alejandro Valverde taking the overall lead in the race, we might have some more fireworks today. And no, we're not talking of the popular Mascletá and the Fallas, the traditional celebrations which, around this time of the year, turn Valencia into "the unrivalled Mozart of fireworks". We're referring to the all-out battle that, with just a few seconds separating the top overall contenders, is likely to break out in today's closing leg. Valjavec, Schleck, Brajkovic, all of them with strong teams besides, might well have a shot at putting Valverde's second GC win here in jeopardy, better if at the two timebonus-awarding Metas Volantes (Hot Spot Sprints) on the menu, even though an attack in the very last hundred metres might work too. As our race preview says: "Stage 5, the final stage in this race from Valencia to Valencia is hilly with the highest 300 metres; but final 80 km of the race are flat, an ill fated recipe for any but the strongest escapees, who will be ridden back by the sprinters and teams with G.C. positions to protect".

The Top 4 Spots on the GC at the end of yesterday's stage were as follows:

1. Alejandro Valverde (Spa - Caisse d'Epargne) - 14h51'16"
2. Tadej Valjavec (Slo - Lampre-Fondital) - at 02"
3. Frank Schleck (Lux - Team CSC) - at 06"
4. Janez Brajkovic (Slo - Discovery Channel) - at 08"

LIVE COVERAGE

1535 CET - The fireworks started from the very beginning with a flurry of early attacks, none of which prospered. But some 30 km. into the stage five guys did make the gap, and amongst them was Valencia's own David Bernabeu (Fuerteventura-Canarias team), who was 01'14" back on GC at the stage start, and could turn virtual GC leader on the road for a short time as the fugitives opened up a gap of about 01'40". But the peloton had no intentions to let them go too far, such that the escapees got reeled in by km. 92.

1540 CET - The bunch is currently together as they're about to regain the streets of Valencia and get involved in the first of four laps of a final urban circuit of slightly above six km. Valverde's Caisse d'Epargne teammates are unsuprisingly riding tempo on the front.

1545 CET - Two Spanish riders now ahead: Ramon Sobrino (Karpin-Galicia) and Saunier-Duval's stage one escapee Raul Alarcón rolled off the front of field as the pack are riding inside Valencia. They are no GC threats at all, so Caisse d'Epargne initially let them take some advantage.

1550 CET - There's perfect agreement between the two escapees, leading the bunch by a dozen secs, who continue their action up front. It's the "reds" of Portugal's Benfica that took over the chase back in the pack, with about 20 km. left.

By the way, Caisse d'Epargne were up to the challenge at today's two Metas Volantes, where Valverde didn't lose any bonus seconds to his closest pursuers. Quite the opposite we'd say. All time bonuses up for grabs at the first mid-stage sprint went to some of the five escapees, while the second, crucial Meta was won by ... Valverde himself, with the Spanish team dealing rivals a 1-2-3 blow as José Ivan Gutierréz and Vicente Reynés filled up the remaining bonus-awarding spots. The Murcian rider, that will be racing on home soil the next week, now smiles at the cameras, he's confident that he can make it.

1552 CET - Sobrino and Alarcón completed the first city lap. The peloton did the same, but 26 seconds behind. Three laps (aka about 19 km) to go.

1555 CET - The two men away continue their cruise through the streets of Valencia, in the middle of the very modern buildings this part of the city offers, and under sunny skies. Too bad that neither them nor the Benfica-led chasing field (with a couple Lampres moving to the front and helping the chase) have time to stop and enjoy the view.

1558 CET - Ramon Sobrino and Raul Alarcón maintain a twenty-two second advantage with the finish only 14 kilometres away, as the peloton meets the 149,761,369th roundabout in this year's Vuelta.

1600 CET - Two laps gone. As many laps to go. And the gap stays the same: 22 seconds. The peloton keeps Sobrino and Alarcón within striking distance, but it's a bit too early for the gun sprinter's teams to get going for real. Such that the two men in the breakaway may still enjoy a few more minutes of TV exposure.

1604 CET - The gap halved to a dozen secs only with 10k to go, while a Lampreman, one Benfica guy, and a teammate of Petacchi's diligently take turn in the pack. It will be hard for Sobrino and Alarcón to start the final lap on the front, we tend to think.

The strung out peloton is on the heels of the escapees, but Andalucia-Caja Sur's Luis Pérez Romero attacks and goes away solo. He may soon steal the show from Alarcón and Sobrino.

1608 CET - Romero joined the two frontrunners. Alarcón can follow him, while Sobrino apparently can't. But the peloton is just a few seconds back.

1612 CET - All three attackers were brought back as the bell lap started. 6k to go. 6k to the bunch sprint. And speaking of the sprint, Lampre's Team Manager Martinalli conceded defeat: just interviewed "on the road", the Italian admitted that Valjavec has no more chances to make enough time gains on Valverde, such that the whole team will be going for the stage and helping Bennati in the quest for his hat-trick. Petacchi and Milram are warned!

1615 CET - Caisse d'Epargne are still mistrustful though, and send Iván Gutiérrez into a one-man attack, thus forcing Lampre (and Milram too) to waste some precious energies in the chase.

1615 CET - The Lampres and Milrams succeeded in bringing the man back. And are now getting ready for the sprint. ONE KM TO GO!

1617 CET - Here comes the final rush to the line and ... surprise, surprise (well, not really), it's a two-man affair between Bennati and Petacchi. The two guys enjoy a good leadout from their respective domestiques, and in the end ... it's BENNATI that wins! And quite easily too!

DANIELE BENNATI (LAMPRE) HAS WON THE STAGE!

Petacchi was runner-up again, while Alejandro Valverde took fourth in the stage. And first in the GC.

ALEJANDRO VALVERDE (CAISSE D'EPARGNE) HAS WON THE 65th TOUR OF VALENCIA!

Here's the Top 5 Places of the stage:

1. Daniele Bennati (Ita - Lampre-Fondital) - 03h15'49"
2. Alessandro Petacchi (Ita - Team Milram) - s.t.
3. Claudio Corioni (Ita - Lampre-Fondital) - s.t.
4. Alejandro Valverde (Spa - Caisse d'Epargne) - s.t.
5. Vicente Reynés (Spa - Caisse d'Epargne) - s.t.

The top overall places should be the same as yesterday, with Valjavec and Frank Schcleck as top three companions of GC winner Valverde. With three stage wins in the bag, Daniele Bennati couldn't help dominating the points classification. Alejandro Valverde secured victory in the Combinada too, while Saunier's super-fighter David De La Fuente did what he had to in order to be crowned King of the Mountains: he crossed the line today. Now the man is on da podium, being rewarded for such accomplishment. Daniele Bennati climbed the podium thrice in the last few minutes: as stage winner, as Points competition champion, and eventually as proud member of the best team in the race (at least according to the Teams Standings): Lampre-Fondital.

Last but certainly not least, Bennati gave his first after-triumph comments: "I'm truly satisfied. With my victory of course. But also because my legs are still okay after five stages. And I'm happy for my team too. To be honest, even just one victory would have been enough, but the success I got in the first stage was a huge moral booster. I realized that I could beat Petacchi, so I tried again. And did it three times. I couldn't be happier now". And when asked if he could be "the next Petacchi", Bennati responded that "It's a bit too early to tell. I still have a long way to go before I can be as successful as him. I should win races like Milan-Sanremo. But I'm still young, I'm just 26, so I think I have plenty of time at my disposal".
