65th Vuelta Valenciana - Stage 4 UPDATED

65th Vuelta Valenciana - Stage 4 Live Coverage
Albada - Alt de Campello

Hello and benvinguts, as they would say in the local language, to our live coverage of the fourth and penultimate stage in the 65th Vuelta Ciclista a la Comunidad Valenciana. With seven climbs (Port d'Albaida, Port de Beniarres, two passages over the Alt de Aielo and as many on the Alt de Portical, plus the challenging ascent to the line) on the menu, and the mountain top finish at Alt de Campello, today's journey of 162 km, which kicks off at Albaida town, can legitimately aim at the status of "queen stage" of the event, and arguably at that of crucial stage.

The first three legs were nothing but a sprinter's affair (better, a two-man affair of Daniele Bennati and Alessandro Petacchi, with the former scoring twice and the latter living up to his nickname AleJet at Calp two days ago), but it's time for overall contenders to get into action, isn't it? Yes, it's time for Valverde, Vinokourov, Iván Gutiérrez, Valencia's own David Bernabeu and/or any other guys hungry to wear that yellow thingy on his shoulders on the Valencia podium come Saturday afternoon to get their legs going.

LIVE COVERAGE: The stage got underway in sunny and pleasant weather conditions at Albaida late this morning. Skirmishes came since the early kilometres, and the breakaway of the day formed soon, such that we currently have five Spaniards leading the bunch by about two and a half minutes, with six climbs gone and just the final ascent to the line to go: David Muñoz (Fuerteventura-Canarias), David De La Fuente (Saunier Duval, on the move for the second straight day), Gorka Verdugo (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Pablo Lastras (Caisse d'Epargne) and nobody else but Oscar Sevilla, this year wearing the Relax-Gam red jersey. The quintet opened up a maximum advantage of about five minutes, but their gap over the pack (now led by the Lampre's, but with some help from other teams like CSC) is steadily dropping.

1540 CET - Some bad news unfortunately: a Panaria rider fell a few moments ago, and he's still on the tarmac. He apparently broke his collarbone. More details to follow asap.

1545 CET - Daniele Colli is the unfortunate rider of Panaria that fell a few minutes ago. The Italian has immediately been taken into a local ambulancia. In the meantime the pack has further cut their gap to the five frontunners down to just 01'46".

David Muñoz, David De La Fuente, Gorka Verdugo, Pablo Lastras and Oscar Sevilla broke clear while coming down the Port de Beniarres. Saunier's De La Fuente took first at all mountain primes since, and consequently strenghtened his grip on the King on the Mountain classification leader's mantle, that he's already wearing. Barring a catastrophe the man from Cantabria, who joined the Saunier crew in 2004 and won the combativity Prize at the past Tour de France, will be officially crowned tomorrow in Valencia.

1550 CET - More gap updates: the five leaders are holding onto a small margin of 85 seconds only. 18k to go as the riders make it to the town of Alcudia de Crespins, with the Lampres steadily riding tempo at the front of the pack. Is Daniele Bennati confident that he can keep the jersey also on the difficult Alt de Campello?

1600 CET - No more team cars between the five fugitives and the chasing bunch, that keep them in sight: the advantage fell under the minute as they rolled out of Alcudia de Crespins. It's a matter of a few minutes only before the peloton gets back together.

1605 CET - Game over for David Muñoz, David De La Fuente, Gorka Verdugo, Pablo Lastras and the still very popular Oscar Sevilla. They got caught as the race is about to hit Vallada town. But immediately after the peloton regrouped, Andalucia-Caja Sur'S José Ruiz counter-attacked.

1608 CET - Some good news at last: according to a very recent update, Daniele Colli did NOT break his collarbone and did NOT suffer any fracture. Of course we'll know more about his conditions later.

1609 CET - The Andalusian rider previously on the move could stay clear a few minutes, but the peloton have chased him down. So they're together again, with under 10 kilometres left. Now we can see different jerseys and colours mixed up together up front. It looks like the Lampres are done with their daily job.

Even though no team has taken over, the pack is flyyyyyying on the way to the first slopes of the final ascent, which they're going to meet soon. But first comes the Hot Spot Sprint at Vallada. Now it's a Rabo-boy that sets the pace, but many a good Lampres can still be seen in the front places.

1615 CET - The pack is winding through the hamlet of Vallada. They're about to reach the Meta Volante point. And after that, it will be all about 4 kilometres of pure mountain battle.

5k to go. The road starts tilting upwards. And it's BENNATI forcing the pace up front! Is he working for Cunego? Is an early season show part of Damiano's plans maybe?

1618 CET - A Rabobank man attacks. And Thomas Voeckler (4th on GC!) follows his move! The peloton counters anyway. Many riders are being dropped already. And an Astana rider fell (but it wasn't Vinokourov)

1620 CET - Yesssssssssss. DAMIANO CUNEGO launched his (expected) attack. He goes away solo and opens up a small gap on the chasers. The going is getting steeeeeep now, by the way. Very steep.

Former escapee Oscar Sevilla was amongst the first ones to get dropped instead. Yellow-jerseyed (but not for a long time again) Bennati lost contact too. But still, this is no surprise: Lampre's man for today is a certain Damiano Cunego.

1621 CET - The Italian goes on. But he's unable to open a solid gap on the first group of about 30 chasers. The finish line is still three kilometres away.

1622 CET - Alejandro Valverde attacks the field and quickly gets across to join Cunego! More and more riders on the move from the pack. Now it's a Team LPR guy that has a go at breaking away. Pointlessly. Oops, it looks it wasn't Valverde who attacked earlier though, sorry. But also looks like Alberto Contador (Discovery) DID make a move, and yes he DID make the gap too!

Contador is in the lead, folks. The peloton is breaking into pieces a little bit, yes, but maybe less than we might expect.

1625 CET - ONE KM to go for CONTADOR. He leads his closest pursuers by ten seconds. The Discovery athlete came first at the top of the Mountain prime, now it's all about a short downhill section to the line.

1626 CET - Contador keeps the pace high. He's flying towards victory.

Valverde drives a first chase group of five.

1627 CET - 100 metres to go for Contador. Now 50, 20, 10 ...

ALBERTO CONTADOR HAS WON THE STAGE!

The first chasers came in at 13". Alberto Contador will not move to the top of the GC, but still he managed to give his team a great success in the queen stage of the Volta Valenciana. He made the winning move at about 2k from the line, and nobody could follow him.

Alejandro Valverde also had a great ride today, and won the sprint for second place thirteen seconds behind. Besides that, the Caisse d'Epargne rider captured the yellow jersey. Valverde is the new GC leader.

1632 CET - Bennati has just crossed the line, several minutes behind Contador and Valverde. His team leader Damiano Cunego gauged his legs in the early part of the ascent, and even if he couldn't make it to the line, the 2004 Giro winner must have some good reasons to be satisfied: Cunego's condition is getting better by the day. Alexander Vinokourov wasn't really a factor in the stage instead.

1638 CET - First post-win words from very grateful (to Discovery) Alberto Contador:  "I know, it's a pity that as I fell in previous stages I cannot be a GC contender anymore, but I'm happy that I won this stage, I was really eager for victory. And I want to dedicate this victory to my team, because they've always believed in me. Without them, I wouldn't be here celebrating such win today".

1645 CET - And here's the Stage Top 5:
1. Alberto Contador (Spa - Discovery Channel) - 04h04'49"
2. Alejandro Valverde (Spa - Caisse d'Epargne) - at 13"
3. Tadej Valjavec (Slo - Lampre-Fondital) - at 13"
4. Frank Schleck (Lux - Team CSC) - at 13"
5. Janez Brajkovic (Slo - Discovery Channel) - at 13"

The new GC (top 5 places) is as follows:
1. Alejandro Valverde (Spa - Caisse d'Epargne) - 14h51'16"
2. Tadej Valjavec (Slo - Lampre-Fondital) - at 02"
3. Frank Schleck (Lux - Team CSC) - at 06"
4. Janez Brajkovic (Slo - Discovery Channel) - at 08"
5. José Miguel Elias (Spa - Relax-Gam) - at 10"

With so many guys in the space of so few seconds, we DO have a race! Tomorrow's final stage into Valencia could be an all-out battle amongst the top overall contenders we've just mentioned. Or it could be the usual ceremonial ride, with a mass sprint finish and the top places staying the same. The time bonuses awarded at mid-stage sprints could play a key role too.

The same Valverde, interviewed after the stage, thinks that Valjavec still poses a very serious threat to his leadership, especially with a strong team like Lampre besides, that can help the Slovene gain the bonus seconds he needs, notably in the aforementioned Hot Spot Sprints.

Sure the Slovenian contingent had a great day in the saddle, with Valjavec and Brajkovic in the top five spots. But so had Discovery, as fifth place finisher Janez Brajkovic is also part of the stage winner's team.

1658 CET - Speaking of other, "minor" standings, Daniele Bennati may have lost the "Maillot Grog" (local language version of the "Maillot Amarillo") but firmly keeps the lead in the Points classification. David De La Fuente just has to cross the Valencia line in order to be officially crowned King of the Mountains. And the Lampres stand atop the Team Standings, while Valverde has gained the Combinada first place.
