65th Volta Comunitat Valenciana - Stage 3 Live Coverage

Hi everyone, and bienvenidos to our live coverage of the third stage in the 2007 Tour of Valencia. The two opening legs of the event were nothing more than a spsrinter's festival, better a personal challenge between Daniele Bennati (winner of the first sprint at Alzira) and Alessandro Petacchi (scoring his hat-track of "local wins" wins at Calpe) and their respective teams Lampre-Fondital and Milram. But things might take a different turn today. As much as they might not. Thursday's ride of 152 km. from and to Vila Real (aka Villareal) has 2 climbs and can be one for the sprinters but also one for a breakaway to succeed, if they can stay away from the sprinters teams to the finish. The final climb of the day, the first category Port del Remolcador comes with 64k to go, and before the mostly down hill rush to the line.

LIVE COVERAGE: We join today's sunny and "hot" stage in progress with two riders away: David de La Fuente (Saunier Duval-Prodir) and Joseba Zubeldia (Euskaltel-Euskadi, younger brother of better-known Haimar Zubeldia). They broke clear - after a first attack from David Millar, Spain's Ruben Pérez and Italian young gun Matteo Priamo was nullified, about 27 km. into the stage, along with another colleague: Juan Carlos Carinen, a Catalan athlete racing with the Andalucia-Caja Sur outfit. But the Catalan was later dropped and swallowed up by the peloton, such that we currently have just Zubeldia and De la Fuente (first at the Vall d'Alba Hot Spot Sprint as well as both Mountain primes on the menu, the Cat.3 Alt de les Useres and the Cat. 1 Port del Remolcador) up front as the race began its rush to the line down the same Port del Remolcador. But the gap is coming down quite fast; the last update says their advantage over the field, currently driven by the Milram chasing machine, dropped under the two-minute mark.

1545 CET - As the peloton crosses a small bridge, the next update brings comparatively good news to the two frontrunners: De la Fuente and Zubeldia slightly increased their advantage to 02'05". But still we can't see how they can make it the line and win against such determined chasers (Petacchi and Zabel's teammates in particular).

1550 CET - The following update proved us right: regardless of the perfect agreement between Joseba Zubeldia and David De La Fuente the gap kept going down again, as the road kept tilting upwards again: 01'38" with 35k left. Yellow-clad Petacchi comfortably follows the wheel of his own "chase masters". He knows he can trust them. He knows they will deliver.

1550 CET - The following update proved us right: regardless of the perfect agreement between Joseba Zubeldia and David De La Fuente the gap kept going down again, as the road kept tilting upwards again: 01'30" with 35k left. Yellow-clad Petacchi comfortably follows the wheel of his own "chase masters". He knows he can trust them. He knows they will deliver.

1600 CET - Zubeldia (1st) and De La Fuente (2nd) got to the Meta Volante at Onda (22k from the line). The peloton, still trailing by 90 secs, are tackling one of the countless roundabouts featuring today's leg as they make their way into town too.

1602 CET - Gap (much or less) slowly but steadily coming down, the last update says it's 01'19". The Italian Marco Marcato apparently had a mechanical but got quickly back into action. A couple Lampres move to the front to help Milram in the chase. It's not time yet for the two Italian teams to turn into enemies. This will (likely) happen on the final straight only.

1605 CET - Zubeldia, De La Fuente and the peloton alike rode out of Onda town, and are currently flying on a flat section. The stage finish is less than 20 km away.

1608 CET- With the time gap under the minute, the peloton can perfectly keep the lead (but for how long?) duo in sight. Except when they meet one of the many roundabouts the roads around Villareal are peppered with of course.

1611 CET - Zubeldia drives his breakaway companion into a last hopeless attempt to hold the oncoming peloton at bay. But the distance is close to zero. It's a just a matter of seconds before they get caught.

1614 CET - And caught they were! The off-the-bunch adventure of brave Zubeldia and De La Fuente came to end a dozen km. from the finish.

1617 CET - Ten kilometres to go. Lampre and Milram keep their "alliance" and keep marshalling things at the front. And keep a very high pace in order to avoid tricky moves from any wannabe fugitives, of course.

1619 CET - Two red jerseys of Portugal's Benfica team briefly stole the show from the Milram and Lampre tempo machines as they rushed to the front and further picked up the pace. The whole peloton is going fast, no way any attacks would prosper in conditions like these.

1620 CET - But the "red domination" up front didn't last long. The two Italian teams took over again soon .
5 km to go now.

1622 CET - Uh, a Raboboy attacks! Quite a pointless effort we say, apart from those four-five seconds of tv exposure he gets. The man is brought back in the twinkling of an eye. Four Milramen and one Lampreman have quickly regained the front.

1624 CET - Alejandro Valverde is riding comfortably in the middle of the pack as the race makes it back to Villareal. Just a couple kilometres ... and we'll have another sprint finish. Now it's 4 Milrams and 2 Lampres taking turns as the field meets another roundabout.

And another one again. That's quite dangerous. Yep, DANGEROUS. So dangerous several riders fell.
And the field was broken apart.
Only a dozen riders remained up front!!! And one of them is Petacchi
But another is Bennati. So it all comes down to a field sprint ... of about SIX MEN!
And who wins the sprint?

It's Daniele Bennati!! YES, THE LAMPRE SPRINTER HAS DONE IT AGAIN!
Daniele Bennati beat AleJet Petacchi to the line for the second time in the space of 48 hours and took his second stage success out of three sprints!

But it was an unusual sprint this time, "courtesy" of the pile-up that took place in the few last hundred metres, and took most of the peloton out of contention; many of Petacchi's and Bennati's leadoutmen included, of course. Petacchi started the sprint, but Bennati got latched on his wheel, and came out in the final metres to take the win.
And it even was an easy win, easier than Tuesday's.

1633 CET - The pile-up happened as the pack met one of the last roundabouts, and a rider sitting in thirteenth wheel hit the tarmac. Such accident caused a split in the bunch, as just about a dozen riders could stay up front. Inside the "dirty dozen" were a couple teammates of Petacchi's too, but this wasn't much of help to AleJet in the sprint. Bennati simply had the best legs today.

As the pile-up happened within final kilometre, all finishers were credited with the same time.

It was good to see Ete back to a top place finish, but we tend to think they are not THAT happy at Milram in this moment. Also because they lost the yellow jersey too: the GC leadership made it was way back to Bennati-land!

1650 CET - Very first after-win comments from Bennati after the crossed the line (and put his hands down):
"I passed Petacchi in the last metres, and I know this is no easy thing. Before the sprint began there was a small fight over Petacchi's wheel, as it's often the case you know, and I "won" it. Plus, some strong headwinds made the sprint more difficult. But in the end it all went right. And I'm a very happy man now."

The Tour of Valencia resumes tomorrow with the fourth, penultimate and "queen" stage, from Albaida to Alt del Campello over 162 km. The stage has got 7 climbs and a mountain top finish atop the Alt del Campello (town of Vallada). The other climbs are Port D’Albaida, Port de Beniarres, Alt de Aielo - to be climbed twice -, Alt del Portixol - also to be climbed twice - and the final ascent to the line (Alt del Campello).
